Portland is having its first ever Macaron Day this Friday. It’s an excuse (if one were needed) to eat French macarons—but it’s also a charity benefit for Meals on Wheels People. Each participating bakery will be offering a free macaron in exchange for a donation ($2+ in cash is suggested). It’s the brain child of Nuvrei’s Maurice Pop, who was inspired by similar events in New York and Paris—his store will be offering Macaron Day maps and special tote bags to the first 100 customers, along with the chance to win a couple of $100 gift certificates. In all, there are a dozen bakeries taking part (there’s a full list here, and it’s worth checking times as some are open first thing in the morning while others keep later hours). Special macarons for the day will also be available (Hungry Heart in Montavilla have a nice looking Turkish Coffee flavor), but with the likes of Pix Pâtisserie, St. Honoré Boulangerie and Maurice being involved, confectionary fans are gong to be in macaron heaven.
