New from the city that excels in turning every little nook and cranny into a full-featured espresso bar: a disused bus shelter will become a coffee shop! Yes, it’s true! This combination of public transit, creative reuse and fancy caffeine should give the New York Times a big, big boner:

The DJC has the details on the space on SW 5th between Salmon and Main. It’ll be run by Caffe Viale, which currently runs a semi-popular café inside an office building right next to the new spot.
Sadly the rest of these shelters were sold at rock-bottom prices as scrap metal, rather than creatively reused in-place or sold to those individuals in-state and out-of-state who had expressed an interest in finding a way to preserve and reuse them on private property (I was one of those individuals.)
The new shelters look fantastic, especially at night (somebody deserves an award for the lighting scheme), but do not offer the same level of protection from the elements, and there’s roughly half as much shelter area per block now than there was before.
Wondered what they were going to do with it.
Caffe Viale is way more than semi-popular. Best Italian pastries and sandwiches in town.
Coffee is excellent also.
Actually I heard a rumor that one or two of them got saved for bike racks at schools.
