Tonight’s Homework: The Mythical Beast Graphic Design Tournament

Cancel all your plans, artistically gifted fantasy geeks/foodies. Entries for Architecture for Humanity‘s Mythical Beast Graphic Design Competition are due tomorrow! But before you run off to start on your wizard-dragon portrait, there’s a weird, food-related twist:

This beast should combine beasts of the sea and beasts of the land, and potentially foodstuffs from both sea and land. E.g. What would a rabbit headed salmon that ate radishes look like? These drawings will be turned into a menu prepared by some famous chefs, so please stick to ingredients/beasts you might find at a Farmers Market in early March.

Beasts: rabbit, chicken, cow, lamb, goat, pig, clams, crab, black cod, smelt, octopus, oysters, scallops, sea urchin, shrimp

Foods:
orach, nettles, avocado, dates, strawberries, artichoke, kumquats, wild mushrooms, cultivated mushrooms, carrots, parsnip, rapini, horseradish, sorrel, olives, arugala, cress, chicories, lettuces, potatoes, grapefruit, squash, broccoli, celery root, radishes, lemons, fennel, seaweed.

(What the frak is orach?) The winner will receive $150 and a seat at one of the secret mythical dinners to be held in locations including (but not limited to) San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago, plus an obscene amount of chocolate from Seattle’s Theo Chocolate. You can email your entries here, but know that in something of a prize-creation FAIL, the airfare for your mythical beast dinner party is not covered by your winnings. Which actually means that even if you win your prize money will already be spent on transporting yourself to eat your prize dinner, and most likely then some. That just doesn’t seem fair. Still, I feel the need to work up a shrimp-headed cow with rabbit feet that lives on seaweed and poops kumquats for my own relaxational benefit.
