The next time you flick on your Xbox 360, you’ll likely be greeted with 10 minutes of downloads.
The culprit? Microsoft has released an update for the console’s online Xbox Live service that, well … I won’t say it changes everything. For most it doesn’t even change “a lot.” But it’s still notable, if only for the fact that it makes everything look slightly different.
I won’t go into the details of what all has been altered — Larry “Major Nelson” Hryb already has that covered — but I will say that it’s nice to see such a stable update. It’s only been up for a few hours, but we’ve yet to encounter mass Internet riots over missing textures or lost gamertags.
That said, I’d keep my helmet fastened. One missing byte and the jubilation of “Free Update Day” could turn into a bloody coup the likes of which haven’t been seen since Bulgaria, 1944.

You know how Dennis Miller had that show on HBO back in the 90’s? The one where he’d made long rambling monologues using all sorts of random and relatively unneccesary analogies and similies? Nex is the Dennis Miller of shitty games journalism. Covering up a lack of insight with a supposed creativty born of innane references.
I’ll fucking shit bricks if he ever actually writes or says something insightful or useful.
Fire Nex and hire someone who cares.
HARSH!
Graham, I thought you had a PS3? Why do you care so much about reading a thorough review about the new XBOX Live updates? Or are you just trolling?
I wanna know: when is Hulu coming to xbox live, and when is the ESPN package thing coming? Those were announced at the beginning of summer. Are they already there, but I just missed it? Did they come with this update?
@ROM: this is in no way a thorough review of the XBL update. This us just nex saying if exists, and then linking to someone else saying what it does. This post is lazy and dumb. We deserve better.
@ ROM: Hulu — Good question. Still being promised, but no official dates as far as I can tell.
ESPN — I think the thing you’re talking about is already there. Or, was installed with the update. I spent an hour watching Seattle Sounders vs LA Galaxy soccer highlights early this morning.
Are you talking about the ESPN3 connectivity?
@Graham: uh, I get it. And I asked why you care so much about reading a detailed one. I own an XBOX and I don’t even care. I mean, I’m going to log on tonight and get the update. I don’t have a choice! At this point alls I want to know is: there was an update, and it doesn’t totally suck. What if he pasted in the text that says what’s in the update? Then we’d know without having to click a link. Or is he only allowed to create his own list of the updates – like a proper reviewer would do?
@Nex: I don’t think I’m talking about ESPN3 connectivity. I’m referring to this announcement: http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-21539_7-20007…
@Rom: Yeah, I think that’s on there. ESPN has its on channel on the dashboard and everything.
Nice. Step 1 complete. Now I need to figure out if any Blazers games will on there!
It’s too bad hulu didn’t come with this update. I want that one.
