- With the region at the beginning of the year’s first major heatwave, Portland and Multnomah County officials are opening five cooling shelters starting tomorrow at 2 pm. Temperatures—brace yourselves—are expected to be in the high 90s and low triple digits through Friday. Isabella Garcia has more.

- The Portland Police Bureau (PPB) has identified the officer responsible for shooting and killing a man in Southeast Portland on Sunday morning as Gelsomina “Mina” Cavalli-Singer—a five year PPB veteran who was one of the first officers on the scene after fellow officer Zachary DeLong fatally shot Robert Delgado in Lents Park last year. Alex Zielinski has the story.
- A new report from the nonprofit Oregon Values and Beliefs Center has found that anti-Asian incidents have surged in the state in the last year-plus, with the rate of anti-Asian crime increasing 300 percent in 2021. According to the report, almost half the state’s Asian residents or one of their family members have been verbally abused.

- Tina Kotek, Christine Drazan, and Betsy Johnson will debate for the first time on Friday afternoon in Welches, Oregon in an event sponsored by Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association. Early polling has suggested that the race will be competitive.
IN NATIONAL NEWS
- Pope Francis visited Canada on Monday, and, on the homelands of Cree nations, apologized in no uncertain terms for the abuse Indigenous children suffered in the country’s Catholic-run residential schools. “I humbly beg forgiveness for the evil committed by so many Christians against the Indigenous peoples,” Francis said.
- California firefighters are working to contain a huge wildfire that has been raging since Friday on the doorstep of Yosemite National Park. The fire could impact air quality in Portland depending on weather conditions and how quickly it can be contained.

- Six congressional staffers were reportedly arrested on Monday afternoon after staging a sit-in in Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s office to demand that the US Senate take significant steps to combat the climate crisis. Schumer has thus far been unable to advance Democratic climate legislation, in part because of the opposition of West Virginia senator and coal baron Joe Manchin.
