Good Morning, Portland! Well, it's gonna be a hot one todayāa high of 95 today and maybe 98 tomorrow!āand [checks calendar] that might make this the last hot weekend of summer. IN LOCAL NEWS:
ā¢ Portland Police acknowledged yesterday that one of the force's officers is currently on administrative leave, after he crashed a rental car he was driving while under the influence, while off duty in Minnesota. Portland Police Chief Bob Day commented that law enforcement officers are āheld to a higher standard," which is interesting becauseāto add perspectiveāif I crashed a rental car while intoxicated, it would cause me TOTAL FINANCIAL AND PROFESSIONAL RUIN. Is that not what's happening? Oh, it actually turns out that "this isnāt the first time Mawdsley has had legal trouble related to his conduct" Mercury News Editor Courtney Vaughn reports.
ā¢ The Fred Meyer grocery and meat department strike that began on Wednesday continues into the weekend and KOIN reports "union members expect the strike to last through [Tuesday September 3]." KOIN also published a list of the Fred Meyer locations participating in the strike. Just a reminder that you can still pick up your prescription at the pharmacy, as this concerns primarily grocery and meat departments.Ā

IN NATIONAL / INTERNATIONAL NEWS:
ā¢ On Thursday, Kamala Harris and Tim Walz sat with CNN's Dana Bash for their first extended interview as presidential and vice presidential running mates. NPR White House correspondent Asma Khalid described it as "not an earth shattering interview. Republicans and Democrats will take from it whatever they want that reinforces their own preexisting perceptions of her."Ā
ā¢When will Walz get down to the questions we have about his old Dreamcast (honestly, such stewardship speaks well of the man)?

ā¢ Donald Trump is now saying he supports in vitro fertilization treatments, despite being responsible for Supreme Court that endangered the medical practice's legality and patient access to it when they overturned Roe v Wade in 2022. In an interview with NBC, Trump said he would make either the government or private insurance pay for IVF treatments. He also said he thinks his Florida's current six-week abortion ban doesn't allow for enough time, although his campaign quickly walked that back, pointing out he didn't actually say how he would vote on the issue, as a registered Florida man, provided that his recent felony condition doesn't exclude him from voting.
ā¢ The former president also had an embarrassing altercation at Arlington National Cemetery this week when he tried to take photos and film video with a family mourning Staff Sergeant Darin Hoover, one of 13 members of the United States military who died during a suicide attack on the US evacuation from Afghanistan in 2021. What a sentence, right? So, you may have known thisāTrump's campaign certainly knows this, but it is illegal to campaign of engage in "election-related activities" within Army national military cemeteries. This is actually a Hatch Act thing, which we all like because its sub head "An Act to Prevent Pernicious Political Activities" is so spicy. Anyway, the long and the short of it is that a gold star military family invited Trump to the memorial. He wanted to use the moment for his campaign. Staff at Arlington National Cemetery tried to accommodate photos with the family by providing authorized cemetery staff members to do so. Trump's campaign wanted to use their own people. A cemetery official tried to stop the unauthorized photos and video and Trump campaign staff members āverbally abused and pushedā them. Then the Trump campaign uploaded the footage to TikTok.
ā¢ Also, Trump's lawyers once again asked the federal court in Manhattan to take the criminal case where Trump received a felony conviction over from the state court. Associated Press reports, his lawyers asked late on Thursday that the higher court overturn Trump's felony conviction "and indefinitely delay his sentencing next month."
ā¢ You perhaps heard that globally beloved actor Ian McKellen fell off a London stage during a performance of a Player Kings in June. The famously composed thespian (Gandalf in the 2001ā2003 Lord of the Rings films and even more notably James Whale in the 1998 Gods and Monsters) reportedly cried out immediately afterward, calling for help. The rest of the show's run was cancelled, while McKellen recuperates. In a recent interview with Saga Magazine, McKellen said he was healing up from a "chipped vertebrae and fractured wrist," but the suit he was wearing to play Shakespearean character Falstaff cushioned the fall.
ā¢ Speaking of performance, I haven't slept much this week, so this channel of German-language overdubs of cute animals is the heaviest material I can handle.
