IN LOCAL NEWS:
• The Multnomah County Auditor’s Office is flagging inefficiencies in Preschool For All spending, noting there are several unfilled seats at many sites, despite families being on waitlists. According to Auditor Jennifer McGuirk, the county is on track to spend about $2 million a month on an estimated 1,250 unfilled seats. The math and ratios aren’t cut and dry though, county officials say. For one, preschools can’t combine classrooms for efficiency just because they may have unfilled slots, because the state requires at least one teacher for every 10 students. Another thing to consider: families may be waitlisted for their preferred preschools, even if seats are available elsewhere. The county says it’s working on an interactive map where families can search for available preschool options by ZIP code.
• He may be from Oakland, but Damian Lillard is a Portlander.
• Well, this is promising: A new blood test could provide early detection of more than 50 types of cancer. Researchers at OHSU’s Knight Cancer Institute recently shared findings from an ongoing clinical trial of a Galleri test developed by biotech company GRAIL. The test works by detecting fragments of DNA shed by cancer cells into the bloodstream, KGW reports. While it isn’t meant to be a diagnosis for cancer, it can indicate where cancer may be present, and help doctors determine whether additional diagnostic testing is necessary. An FDA panel has already recommended the test for approval.
• Alt-pop, trip-hop, and Lynch-inspired music inspires the feels this week. Do This, Do That also scooped up the details on two new stage productions, an outdoor piano concert at Lewis & Clark College, and a craft chocolate festival.
IN NATIONAL/WORLD NEWS:
• Following the powerful nor’easter that caused major flooding, a shark was spotted swimming along the streets of Long Beach Island in New Jersey. Two dorsal fins can be seen poking out of flood waters in Surf City, in a video captured by a resident that is making its way through the national news cycle. Marine researchers believe it was likely a dogfish–a small, bottom-dwelling shark often found in the Atlantic Ocean.
• An American cyclist nabbed the Elite Men’s Road Race World Title on Sunday, September 27 in Montreal, Canada. Brandon McNulty of Phoenix, Arizona is the first American to win the international title since 1993. Overall, three Americans—McNulty, Quinn Simmons of Durango, Colorado, and Matteo Jorgenson of Boise, Idaho—placed in the top three at the cycling competition, marking a major win for Team USA.
• Today marks day one of the United States’ ban on certain Canadian imported goods like alcohol, dairy products, and vehicles. After Trump announced 50 percent tariffs on Canadian imported goods, Canada responded with its own import tariffs on goods imported from the US. Then came the outright ban on certain Canadian products. Trump accuses Canada of unfair trade practices because the country rolled out its own tariffs on American goods in response to Trump’s initial tariffs. Now we’re in a trade war with our neighbor that we previously had a strong, stable trade relationship with.
• Gas is expensive, but ya know what? So are cars. That’s why we’re rolling back fuel efficiency standards. You’re all welcome. The Trump administration is revising Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency standards from 50.4 miles per gallon by 2031 to 34.9 miles per gallon. Boom! Less fuel efficient cars= more savings for you at the dealership, buddy! (But probably not, because tariffs, so don’t try to get cute and haggle your way into a good deal on that 16 mpg Dodge Ram in two years.)
