The weather outside might be frightful, and we wouldn’t describe this year as “delightful,” but the holidays should add some sparkle to the shortest days of the season. Our recommendation? Layer up and explore a mix of powder-fresh winter activities and timeless Portland traditions. We’ve collected a mix of sleigh bell-ringin’ events below, including Black Nativity, The Portland Mercury‘s Holiday Drink Week 2024, Portland Winter Ice Rink, and A Charlie Brown Christmas Live. Portland Winter Ice Rink
Lace up your skates and channel local ice princess Tonya Harding, because the Portland Winter Ice Rink is back for its second year. Skaters can take the ice for 1.5-hour sessions, so bundle up before gliding around the outdoor rink. Beginners can even rent a cute seal-shaped skating aid, which I hope is not limited to children. Après-skate, warm up at the adjacent winter village with a hot beverage in hand, hang for a while in a cozy lounge, and check out the marketplace. As long as no one leaves the ice screaming, “Why? Whyyyyy??” in agony, it all sounds like the perfect winter outing. JANEY WONG

Be mesmerized as you walk through tunnels of sparkling lights, ride the zoo train, and enjoy treats like elephant ears and hot cocoa.
