ThinkProgress is reporting that Newt Gingrich secretly gave $350,000 to anti-gay groups including AFA Action:
Last year, former Speaker Newt Gingrich offered his vocal support for the ultimately successful campaign to oust three of the nine Iowa Supreme Court justices who had unanimously ruled in favor of marriage equality. As Gingrich courts social conservatives while exploring a possible presidential bid, new disclosures from his camp indicate that he and his associates bankrolled more than one-third of the $850,000 campaign to remove the Iowa justices…AFA is not only of the nation’s most prominent anti-LGBT groups, it has been officially labeled a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center. As ThinkProgress has reported, the AFA is known for making incendiary comments about gays, including blaming gays for crop failure and various other biblical plagues, claiming that Hitler was gay, saying lesbians can’t be justices, equating gay sex with domestic terrorism, and equating gay sex to heroin, just to cite a few examples.
You’d think someone who was so goddamned intent on preserving family values conservatism wouldn’t have such a lurid history.

So does this mean that Gingrich is really a closet-dwelling gay?
You just lost my vote, Gingrich.
The Southern Poverty Law Center’s spurious definition of “hate groups” states:
โAll hate groups have beliefs or practices that attack or malign an entire class of people, typically for their immutable characteristicsโ
The Boy Scouts of America have said publicly for decades that gay men lack the โmoral valuesโ required to be Scout Leaders. That sounds like a malignant attack on an entire class of people, and yet you wonโt find a word about the BSA on the SPLCโs web site, and theyโre certainly not on the โHate Map.
The BSA receives millions of dollars in public funding each year, and their core business, their entire raison dโรชtre, is to mold the minds and shape the characters of millions of American boys, but somehow this doesnโt cross the SPLCโs scrupulous โhate groupโ threshold. Why not?
The answer is simple. Many of the SPLCโs mostly elderly donors were Scouts, or the proud parents/grandparents of Scouts, and linking the almighty donors to a โhate groupโ is bad for business. Fighting โhateโ is all well and good until it cuts into the bottom line.

The most ironic (read: “hypocritical”) thing about the Southern Poverty Law Center is that NOT ONE of its top ten, highest paid executives is a minority.

In fact, according to the SPLC’s hometown newspaper, the Montgomery Advertiser, despite being located LITERALLY in the back yard of Dr. Martin Luther King’s home church, the SPLC has NEVER hired a person of color to a highly paid position of power in its entire 40 year history.
