If you call yourself progressive but still shame fat bodies, slut-shame women, ridicule people for how they dress, fuck, cope, grieve, or behave, you’re not. You’re helping to uphold the social standards of oppression.
You can’t preach liberation while deciding which bodies are respectable and which people are worthy of compassion.
Ridicule and shame aren’t harmless little opinions. They are social control. They teach people what happens when you step outside the acceptable box. they reinforce the same hierarchies, stigma, and oppression you claim to be fighting. Nobody owes you a version of themselves that makes you comfortable.
If your progressivism ends where someone else’s body, sexuality, coping, or behavior makes you uncomfortable, you’re not opposing an oppressive system, you’re just enforcing it with better vocabulary.—Anonymous
