That’s what I wanted. I wanted to be that couple. I still want little else. I remember being that sappy teen at the wedding, listening to the DJ’s countdown: “20? 30? 40? 50 years!” Watching those ol’ birds dance for as long as their legs could hold them up. It was special. I’ve cherished those moments at every wedding I’ve ever been to.
I did have something once. I worked my ass off, I always tried to compromise, and did everything and anything I could to keep my marriage alive. When things got rough, I opened myself up to anything that would rectify it. It just didn’t matter.
Now, I’m in an open relationship. It works, it’s fine. But I still catch myself crying in the shower. I can’t watch romcom without having to go over it- over, and over, and over again. I like my partner(s)… but it’s very clear that none of them want that… we all want fun.
The older I get, the less likely it seems that anyone will be interested in the long haul. It just doesn’t seem like anyone is interested in that lifestyle anymore. But I suppose it’s fine, I’ve learned quite a bit.
So I have my fun, I take my pills, I get my kicks. But I don’t go to weddings anymore.

  1. Awww gross man!!! You know what that couple is gonna do when they get home? They’re gonna have old people sex!!!!

In theory it sounds really sweet, but in practice? Super disgusting!!!

  2. I/anonie, you sound real sweet and all, but this rant is not a rant. I think you had a little bit of liquid sunshine, and decided “I’m sad. Let’s all be sad.” Here is an idea, quit talking about good old times. They are over. Start living in the present. You sound like you live in a nursing home.
Now get back to living, and stay busy. Then you won’t be so sad. Lose your partners, open relationships are a thing of the past. Be more upbeat and your whine is just awful.
