José González at the Roseland

José González at the Roseland

Putting on a José González record always feels like therapy: plunging, honest, soothing, and beautiful in an aching kind of way—yet always upholding a forward moving motion. You're going to be okay. And seeing him play live is all the more affecting on those tender inside parts. González is touring the US in support of his newest release, Vestiges and Claws, an album that is just as welcoming and full of love as ever. It's full of expertly crafted sonic reminders of the importance of compassion and appreciating the rare beauty of our very existence— truths we all need to keep a little closer in our daily routines. The sound was great in a sold-out Roseland for his Portland show on Friday night, and the four other musicians touring with him were an appreciated addition to the experience. Ólöf Arnalds, an Icelandic musician with an infectious smile and charming stage presence, opened the show.
