Here’s the hotly anticipated trailer for the Crouching Tiger-style mystery, Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame (starring Andy Lau with art direction and fight choreography by Sammo Hung) which is just so goddamn gorgeous, if it weren’t already spoken for I’d marry it. Beautiful cinematography, amazing CG, ass-kicking martial artistry, and I’m pretty sure that’s a ninja drop kicking a goat. Check it out.

Bang bang, choo-choo train, let me see you shake that thang. Wm. Steven Humphrey is the editor-in-chief of the Portland Mercury and has held the job since 2000. (So don’t get any funny ideas.)

  1. I’m sorry to break to you, but this movie is really terrible! I saw it at SIFF this year and it was my biggest disappointment. It looks like it was made in the early 90’s in terms of bad CGI effects and the martial arts were very lame. The story is laughably bad. It might make a good midnight MST3K style mockable film, but don’t expect it to be good.

  2. Couldn’t disagree more with Z. This movie is a blast. My jaw dropped several times while watching it because of it’s awesomeness. Great acting, beautiful costumes/sets, and wildly imaginative.

  3. Tsui Hark has been making fun HK action films before most of us were born. Mrs C&B and I saw it and agreed that it fits comfortably among Once Upon A Time In China or Warriors of Zu; full of cliche but entertaining in a big budget sense. I think most fans of Chinese action/fantasy films will enjoy this.
