Kill your television? Not yet! Even those who despise exorbitant cable television rates can now enjoy the juiciest of TV’s fruits thanks to the wizardry of the DVD. More and more of the finest shows are being distributed on disc and with lots of hot-ass extras. Looking for something funny? Look no longer!
– Chappelle’s Show: Season One Uncensored (2004)–Not since Richard Pryor has a comedian been able to hilariously nail down the plight of the black American. In this un-bleeped retrospective of the first season, Dave explores what it would be like if The Real World cast was all black–except for one white guy; or if a crack addict was ordered to do community service by giving an anti-drug speech to elementary school kids.
– Strangers With Candy: Second Season (2004)–Another comedy goldmine! Amy “Sister of David” Sedaris stars in this gut-busting parody of “After School Specials.” Jerri Blank is a former drug addict/prostitute/ dropout in her mid-40s who drops back into high school only to encounter the same old problems. SEE! Jerri help a blind student join the football team. SEE! Jerri unsuccessfully try to reclaim her virginity. And SEE! Jerri attempt to cover up the hit & run of her art teacher, Mr. Jellineck. Co-starring The Daily Show‘s Stephen Colbert, Strangers is a delightfully nasty treat.
– Curb Your Enthusiasm: Complete First Season (2004)–Pessimism and misanthropy never fare well on American TV, which is why HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm is such an underground hit. Larry “Creator of Seinfeld” David stars as himself in this pseudo-documentary of his life in Hollywood. Born without the filter that stops most people from acting like an asshole, Larry sets out to annoy every single person he comes in contact with–and yet somehow is entirely likable. Takes a little getting used to, but who can deny the hilarity of an episode that combines The Vagina Monologues with Larry infiltrating an incest survivor group?
