The news that Kiss Kiss Bang Bang writer/director Shane Black—who also wrote Lethal Weapon, The Last Boy Scout, The Long Kiss Goodnight, and, ah, Last Action Hero—would be directing Iron Man 3 was excellent, because… well, c’mon. You saw Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. You know. But this first trailer for Iron Man 3 is weird, because it doesn’t look like a Shane Black movie at all. It looks like Marvel’s best attempt at one of Christopher Nolan’s mopey Bat-movies.

Don’t get me wrong—if there’s a character in the Marvel movie-verse who can pull off a big pout and make it interesting, it’s Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark, and after the so-so Iron Man 2, I’m guessing they’re trying to make this one as well as they can. But the tone of this feels weird, especially following the sugar rush that was The Avengers. I’m trying to figure out what could’ve bummed Tony Stark out so much that he doesn’t even seem like Tony Stark anymore. Maybe the City of New York decided to bill him directly for all the property damage that he and his dumb buddies caused.

  1. I think you’re ignoring the real issue here. That’s Iron Patriot armor. Norman Osborn is obviously not going to be in this movie. What the fuck.

No way. Tony Stark doesn’t pout and he doesn’t do it very well. Peter Parker, however, does mopey fairly well.

  3. @guspasho: Oh, agreed. But in terms of the Marvel movie-verse? The Avengers-related movies Marvel makes, not Sony? Pete, the undisputed mope champ, is taken out of the picture.

And if only based on Matt Fraction’s fantastic Invincible Iron Man run, I’d say Tony’s doing alright when it comes to feeling sorry for himself.
