Pardon the unapologetic music dorkery, but this is the sort of thing that the staff of End Hits obsesses over: How many male drummers stand while playing? We were reminded of this following the sad news about Bobby Z (“We’re a band… right?”), and while we can list plenty of ladies that stand while drumming (We love you Moe Tucker, even if you are a Tea Party member), the list of male drummers without a stool is a little tougher.
Here is what we have so far:
Slim Jim Phantom of the Stray Cats
Victor DeLorenzo of the Violent Femmes
Tali White of the Lucksmiths
Dave Hartman of Southern Culture on the Skids
Andy Sturmer of Jellyfish
The Scary Clown from Slipknot
Bobby Gillespie of the Jesus and Mary Chain (there is some debate about this one)
I know we are missing some. Help us out in the comments section.
End Hits: Our next list will be of lefthanded didgeridoo players.

Why just male drummers? Do a lot of female drummers stand while playing?
No male or female drummers use a stool. It’s called a drum throne!
I do imagine drumming while sitting in stool would be hard.
@Reymont No real reason. There definitely are more well-known female drummers that stand, and we just wanted to come up with a dumb list.
Briefly, yet notably, The Butthole Surfers drummers King Coffee and Theresa, back when they had two drummers, they both stood and occasionally rapidly switched kits mid-song. This was all back when they were still interesting and no one was ashamed to go to shows with the tops of their heads blown open by psychedelics.
Tito Puente, Willie Bobo, Ramon Banda, José “Chepito” Areas, Orestes Vilató… todos los timbaleros…
This is the best Blogtown post in a long while, Ezra. Exactly my brand of music dorkery.
Maybe a better question is: How many male blogtown readers sit down to pee?
every one in a taiko group
I think Uncle Jesse from Jesse and the Rippers stood up to drum. Coincidentally, I always stood up to watch Full House.
Two words:
hemmorrhoidal swelling.
@NJDPMH I thought Jesse sang and played guitar? He was the drummer?
I think at one point Uncle Jesse stood and sang.
The drummer from The Need always stood up. Aren’t they back together or doing reunion shows again?
The dude from Guster.

I can’t believe I just looked that up.

Go to 2:16. It looks like we are both right.
Yes, the dude from Guster, Brian Rosenworcel. Not only does he stand, but he also tapes up his fingers and uses them as sticks.
Hey what about Sheila E.?
