Much like whales or planets, Rock is in need of saving. That is why PDX Rock Fest is holding a daylong celebration/concert to “Save the Rock” after the disappearance of a Portland Rock radio station. Which station? Well, over the course of a 667-word (coincidence?) press release we just received, it does not once state the name of the station that disappeared. It’s like all traces of it have been expunged from the recordโlike the existence of a UFO or something! (Coincidence?) Quoth the press release:
After the outpouring of a mixture of grief and anger at losing their only Active Rock station in Portland โPDX Rock Festโ is a rally point to โSave the Rockโ and unite rock fans in Portland in a day long celebration outdoors on August 28th from 12PM TO 9PM at Washington County Fairplex.
Hey, I like Rock! What bands are playing?
In addition to Korn are northwest legends Queensryche, soaring up and comers Five Finger Death Punch, multi platinum artists Chevelle, Hinder, All That Remains and from Guns N Roses and Velvet Revolver rock royalty Duff McKagan and his band Loaded.
Well, is there anything we can do in the meantime to Save the Rock? As it turns out, yes there is:
There will be a โSave the Rockโ rally from 7am-8am at the Paul Bunyan statue in North Portland on 5/12.
I’m there! Nothing says “Rock” like getting up extremely early in the morning. Also, this allows ralliers to get to their jobs at the Dancin’ Bare at 8 am sharp.
Full press release after the jump.
End Hits: We’re saving Rock, Rawk, Crocs, and The Rockโone extremely early morning rally at a time.

Godsmackโs Sully Erna raved about playing in front of a capacity rock crowd in Portland in 2010 and Brent Smith of Shinedown stated, “It’s all in a days work for a city that truly knows how to rock… Long live Portland, and long live PDX ROCK FEST!”

Methinks this begs for a Merc staff member concert challenge.
This is why rock is dead. Kids today just don’t get it. 7-8am is just before bedtime, not “getting up extremely early.” Duh.
Seriously? Who the fuck thinks anyone is going to get up and be somewhere between 7-8AM to “save” rock? That’s the most fucktarded idea I’ve heard in a long time.
FOR ONCE I AGREE WITH D!!! Please make Erik Henriksen go to this.
I’m all for more rock in this flaccid town but…um…I don’t know about any of these bands.
Who or what exactly is it we are saving by giving money? The promoter maybe?
Broadcasting – radio and TV is dieing. Maybe old people still think it is useful. But everyone else is streaming, downloading, Pandoraing, torrenting, iTuning and Netflixing over the Internet. Or they are DIYing it with Garage Band or on real instruments in their basement. Let’s use the airwaves for something more useful than rock and bad ads.
rock isn’t dead, just the played out sound and image of all those bands and lame stuff like “save the _____” fake rallies for nothing
Queensryche? Really?
This is a really weird lineup.
