“To our Fans and Friends: As R.E.M., and as lifelong friends and co-conspirators, we have decided to call it a day as a band. We walk away with a great sense of gratitude, of finality, and of astonishment at all we have accomplished. To anyone who ever felt touched by our music, our deepest thanks for listening.” R.E.M.

  1. @D, I may be a tool, but what’s the big deal… it’s not like Stipe died or something. They’ll do a dumb fucking reunion tour in a few years, and meanwhile, you can tune in to KINK (or whatever oldies pop station) and be bombarded with a non-stop REM wankfest for the next few days.

  2. Steve R, “whiny 80s college pop” is just not accurate. Stipe isn’t whiny, compared to most indie rockers or even most hard rockers. Mills backup vocals aren’t whiny. 2011 “collapse into now” is 21 years out of the 80’s and might even recapture some of their good years. College? Sure, they went to college for a while, but your category of “college pop” is also bullshit– name a significant set, and defining features, for us if you will.

Sorry someone pissed in your cheerios this morning. Keep it to yourself while others pay respects.
