Portland Tribune reporter Jim Redden quotes Columbia CEO Tim Boyle this morning.

“The sportswear executive says he will contribute money to the campaign, although he would not say how much.

“I will be giving money to it, and it will not be the largest contribution,” Boyle says.

I still think this second campaign is bullshit. But this news does make it a fraction less bullshitty. Your thoughts?

Matt Davis was news editor of the Mercury from 2009 to May 2010.

  1. What will make the campaign less bullshit is if somebody who had previously donated a substantial sum of money to Adams’ election campaign also donates a substantial sum of money to the recall. Without that happening, it’s just going to be seen (quite rightly) as people who are bitter that he won the election and can’t get over it, and refuse to allow democracy to do its job.

Every time someone says (or even implies) “I want to recall him because I don’t agree with his policies”, they’re saying that they know better than the electorate. That might not be as egregious and bile-worthy as his homophobic opponents, but it’s no more valid. That sort of arrogance and selfishness dooms the campaign to bullshittery.

  2. Columbia Sportswear are classic Republicans. They want to pay nothing for all the special benefits. Adams has engaged Portland businesses and their needs, post Columbia relocating from St Johns to tax free Washington County years ago. Columbia is in a Beaverton tax free autonomous zone of Washington County as is the big shoe company.

They want the benefits of a beautiful and engaging city, our awesome environment, access to the ocean/ mountains/ hot springs, tax free.

I believe the Boyle’s live in LO, outside PDX city limits.

  3. Starting with my usual disclaimer – Adams is a lying tool – I will follow with this – Tim Boyle needs to shut up. If he was really interested in staying involved in Portland politics, he shouldn’t have moved his business to the burbs.

As much as I would like to see Adams get what he deserves, the chance to do that has already passed. I’ll make my stand in three years (almost 2 1/2 now) when our primaries start again.

  4. Columbia Sportswear lost all respect from me when they moved to Vancouver, WA. I will never buy a stitch of their clothing.

Oh! AND the second recall effort is BS. Ta-daaaa! *jazz hands*

  5. I also think the second recall campaign is bullshit. I do not see how this news makes it less bullshitty. Please explain.
โ€œI will be giving money to it, and it will not be the largest contribution” means I’ll contribute but not very much… which underscores Stu’s spot-on comment.

  6. pdxMB — what, exactly, does Adams deserve?

The right not have his personal life brought up in an interview at a shitty weekly paper?
The right for people to judge him based on his policies and accomplishments (or loack thereof) while in office, rather than on who he had sex with?

  7. As someone mentioned earlier, Columbia Sportswear left town when they weren’t offered another free ride – which begs the question: does Tim Boyle even live in Portland?

  8. I can freakin’ see Columbia Sportwear’s headquarters from my bedroom window. Just north of Beaverton, next to Sunset High School (I can also hear their marching band practice OVER AND OVER — learn the song already, kids!).

  9. He should just put that money in a paper bag, take a shit in it, light it on fire and thrown it at Adam’s door. That way it will have an actual affect. Dickwad!!!!

  10. @blownspeakers:

I could give a shit about who he fucks. Really. But he is a serial liar, and I will work to see him defeated in 2012. I happen to like most of his policies – but I would prefer to have a mayor with his policies who, for example, is actually welcome to be seen with our US Senators. And who can be relied upon. And who doesn’t have a game plan that consists of running around with his ass on fire trying to prove how effective his “leadership” is.

I stated that I’m ready to move on and vote my conscience in 2012, so why the fuck do you assume that I think this is about his sex life?

  11. I think that Matt Davis thought that the winds were blowing in Sam Adams favor and wanted to get into the good graces of the soon to be ex-Mayor. Just wait, once this recall succeeds he will be writing all kinds of things how Portland is better.
