Update, 7:40pm: Sgt. Greg Stewart from the Portland Police Department says they’re not releasing any more information until tomorrow. The knife-weilder is alive, as far as Stewart knows. No one else has been reported injured.
Update, 6:55pm: A third email says police used a “less-lethal shotgun (a weapon which shoots beanbags and is used to attempt to stop individuals without using a firearm)” to try and stop the self-cutter, but when that didn’t work, he was shot with a real gun because he “came within a short distance” of the officer who shot him, according to the email.

There’s the first alert, which appears to indicate that if you stab yourself, you might get shot by the cops. But, wait, there’s more:
Since then, the Mercury received a second email stating that the subject had broken into a house occupied by a woman and two young children in the 1500 block of SE Boise. The woman and kids escaped and called the police, according to the second email alert.
“Officers began to set-up (sic) containment on the location and shortly thereafter the shooting occurred,” the email said.
That’s what we know now. We’ll update with more info as soon as we figure out why some dude with a knife got shot by the cops.

Too bad he didn’t get more bang for his buck. Just like the penalty’s the same for robbing an ATM as it is for stealing a loaf of bread.
Well, it was kind of exciting to have my block cordoned off all evening. Props to the cops who at least went and retrieved our dog for us, it was much appreciated.
