Oregon is now the first state in the nation to recognize cannabis as anything less serious than a Schedule I prohibited drug.
The Oregon State Board of Pharmacy voted today to classify cannabis as a “Schedule II Controlled Substance,” which acknowledges that the drug has medicinal value while still retaining a “high abuse potential.”
Schedule I drugs have “high abuse potential and no acceptable medical use in the United States.”
The Oregon Controlled Substances Act has three more Schedules (III, IV and V), for progressively less harmful or “serious” drugs.
“This action is consistent with Oregon’s assertion that marijuana does have an acceptable medical use,” said the Board in a press release today.
