Alabama? YOU ARE ON A ROLL! Today’s hillbilly headline of the day from The Birmingham News:

A Jefferson County teacher picked the wrong example when he used assassinating President Barack Obama as a way to teach angles to his geometry students.
The teacher was apparently teaching his geometry students about parallel lines and angles, officials said. He used the example of where to stand and aim if shooting Obama.
“He was talking about angles and said, ‘If you’re in this building, you would need to take this angle to shoot the president,’ ” said Joseph Brown, a senior in the geometry class.
Efforts to reach the teacher for comment Monday were unsuccessful. Superintendent Phil Hammonds said the teacher remains at work, and there are no plans for termination.
“We are going to have a long conversation with him about what’s appropriate,” Hammonds said. “It was extremely poor judgment on his part, and a poor choice of words.”
Caroline Polk, the parent of a ninth-grader at the school, said she doesn’t believe the teacher ought to be fired.
“We all make mistakes, and we should be able to learn from our mistakes,” she said. “What he said was just wrong and inappropriate. Everyone’s got their own opinions, but we have to be aware of our surroundings. At this point, it just needs to be handled in a way that it won’t be repeated.”
UPDATE: The teacher has been placed on leave. Why are they allowing this guy to have more free time on his hands??

Can we just abort Alabama?
I didn’t realize that teaching kids how to shoot people was an opinion.
Oh, jeez. Come on, picture him in class on a hot Alabama day, trying desperately to get his 17-year-old students interested in Geometry. I’m sure the example got a lot of laughs, got the kids to pay attention for another ten minutes. Should he have done it? No, he should have stuck with billiard analogies or something. But you can enlist in the Army as a high school senior, and every single one of those kids has played Halo, so the idea of shooting people shouldn’t be that shocking.
A hunting example would be as effective and more responsible. But the real issue here is what are high school seniors doing in a geometry class? Shouldn’t they be in pre-cal or Calculus at that age?
Reymont you do realize he just committed a felony, right?
It doesn’t have as much to do with the action he was talking about as it does the “who” he was talking about.
It’s a felony to discuss killing the President of the United States.
Not that you guys are discussing it or anything, of course!!
@Jackattak – Are you sure it’s doesn’t only become a felony if you are planning on doing it? Seems like, under your interpretation, Secret Service agents would be committing a felony every time they worked out their daily assignments. His usage doesn’t seem different than any newspaper discussing the attempted shooting of Reagan.
Oh fer cryin out loud you guys now what I’m talking about!!
I’m not sure what he did was illegal but he’s probably having a little convo with the Secret Service right about now. I wouldn’t be surprised if his tax return gets flagged for an audit too. Dumbass.
No, Steve, we’re discussing a discussion of killing the president.
STOP DISCUSSING THAT!!
@Reymont: The idea of shooting people shouldn’t be that shocking??? Are you out of your fucking min… Oh wait, that was irony, wasn’t it?
This teacher needs to go DIRECTLY to jail. Certainly FIRED at the very least. Alabama, I have lived in this state for 23 years but you never cease to amaze me with your ignorance, bigotry and hatred. FIRE THIS GUY! If this hadn’t happened in Birmingham, Alabama, I guess things may have been a little different. Does no one remember the 1960’s? What do you think would have happened to a teacher of Arabic descent if in 2002 he had done the same thing? Can you say – “sent directly to GITMO?” No attorney, no miranda rights – just off to Gitmo. Well, Mr. Jefferson County Sheriff – WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? I am disgusted & ashamed to be an Alabamian today.
