We need your help. The economic fallout of the coronavirus has threatened our ability to keep producing the Mercury. If you’re able, please consider donating to the Mercury.

• The race for Multnomah County District Attorney comes down to two candidates, Make Schmidt and Ethan Knight. We asked them each to weigh in on COVID-19 in jails and prisons, policy body-worn cameras, and more in our endorsement questionnaire—read their full responses here.
• As of yesterday, Oregon had a total of 2,759 positive and presumptive cases of COVID-19. Check out more coronavirus updates in our super succinct and informative daily roundups!
• ICYMI: The Mercury has not endorsed Sam Adams for Portland City Council, despite what you may have seen on Facebook. You can check out all our May 2020 endorsements here!
• The New York Times is here to burst your bubble, with a reminder that although cases are starting to slow in some epicenters, "Cases are [still] growing by 2 to 4 percent daily, and more than 1,000 people have died each day for over a month" in the United States. But, you know, we've gotta open those hair salons!
• The Trump administration, never one to waste a perfectly good opportunity to make things worse, is using the pandemic as cover to roll back environmental protections. Pacific Northwest state officials aren't happy about it.
• Meanwhile, Matt Pottinger— Trump's deputy national security adviser—delivered a speech entirely in Mandarin yesterday to send a message to Chinese citizens. He warned against what happens "when a privileged few grow too remote and self-interested," which sounds like sound advice for US Republicans as well.
• Here's a nice, weird long read to help pass the time!
A few weeks back, I got hypnotized and did past life regression therapy to deal with my pandemic anxiety and what I got was..... much, much, much weirder than I'd planned for https://t.co/jNVJQ094UY
