Good morning, Portland! Today is the day our fall arts issue hits newsstands—pick up a copy or go here for some culture.
Here are the headlines.
One Night, Glory: The next Democratic presidential debate is happening September 12, and just 10 candidates have made the cut this time. That means that, mercifully, this debate will only last one night, not two.
Also, this happened:
Today, I am ending my campaign for president.
I am so proud of this team and all we’ve accomplished. But I think it’s important to know how you can best serve.

Penalty: Governor Kate Brown plans to call a special legislative session soon to amend one bill passed earlier this year. The law in question significantly limits Oregon’s use of the death penalty—but some say that the way it’s written could make it applicable to past convictions, causing some problems for Oregon’s criminal justice system.

Trump’s America: An Oregon woman who was born in the US but grew up in Mexico was denied a US passport, with the State Department claiming her original birth certificate is “insufficient evidence of citizenship.” This kind of thing is happening more often under the Trump administration—so the ACLU of Oregon is suing on her behalf.

Data Deluge: A majority of Black Portlanders disagree with this statement: “In Portland, we are making progress on becoming a city where a person’s outcomes are not based on their race.” That stat comes from a new report from Portland’s City Budget Office, which plans to use the data in next year’s budgeting process. Alex Zielinski’s got the full scoop in Hall Monitor.
