Good morning, Portland! Current mood: About seven out of ten Thunbergs.

Here are the headlines!

“How dare you!” Gen Z showed us all how to protest last week, holding a global Climate Strike that saw thousands participating locally. But Greta Thunberg has a message for anyone leaning too hard on young people for hope: “How dare you! You have stolen my dreams and my childhood with your empty words.” You can watch the teen climate activist’s full speech to the UN yesterday here.

Oh, but also! Don’t sleep on the young people of color making a difference on this issue—including the ones right here in Portland.

Impeach the Motherfucker Already: Washington D.C. Democrats have located their collective spine and are starting to maybe, possibly consider impeaching Trump for his latest scandal. “By failing to act, Congress is complicit in Trump’s latest attempt to solicit foreign interference to aid him in US elections,” Elizabeth Warren recently tweeted.

StrikeWatch2k19: Kaiser Permanent admin and workers begin two days of contract negotiations today. These negotiations have been a beleaguered process, and if the two sides can’t come to an agreement this week, a strike may be in the cards next month.

Mall, Rats: Rep. Janelle Bynum’s daughter and her friends—all young Black women— were hanging out in a car parked in the Clackamas Town Center parking lot for maybe 20 minutes when a security guard ordered them to leave. Bynum’s now calling for a “loiter-in” at the mall to protest racial profiling. I’m pretty sure everything I’ve ever done at a mall could be described as “loitering,” and I’ve never gotten in trouble for it, so I support this.

October 8:

UnionWatch2k19: Tech is a new frontier for union organizers, and so far not many tech workers have been eager to unionize. But some Google contractors—who don’t get sick days and make considerably less than full Google employees—are thinking about shaking things up in Silicon Valley.

Tax the Rich: Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders released his wealth tax plan yesterday, which includes a one percent annual tax on households with a net worth over $32 million—in other words, the top one-tenth of the one percent. According to economists, such a plan would “entirely close the gap in wealth growth between billionaires and the average American family.”

Nonsense: As I type this, updates are rolling in about Trump’s speech at the UN General Assembly. He’s apparently already said the future belongs to “patriots,” not “globalists,” and has slammed Iran for its “bloodlust.”
