Good morning, Blogtown! Are you ready for some Thursday news?

Remember those vandals who defaced a railing at Tumalo Falls last year? They were tracked down and fined thanks, in part, to their story going viral. Let’s not teach our kids to be jerks, mmkay?

A second Oregon judge—Washington County Judge Thomas Kohl—announced he’ll no longer perform weddings of any kind because he doesn’t think gay people should be allowed to get married. Marion County Circuit Judge Vance Day made the same bigoted decision recently.

In-n-Out opened its first Oregon location yesterday in Medford amid much hoopla and fanfare and Instagramming of double doubles with fries animal style. The company president announced more Oregon stores are on the way.

Does Portland really need In-n-Out, though? The Merc‘s popular Burger Week shows we already have the corner on the market of burgers, and the O recently had their first Nacho Week. They’ve rounded up what they found are the city’s 10 best nacho options right here.

Time for weather: Summer’s not over yet, folks. Portland today can expect sunny skies and a high of 85 degrees.

The Portland Development Commission was “less than enthusiastic” last week over a proposal to increase the amount of city money dedicated to creating affordable housing, with spokesman Shawn Uhlman saying it’s a “zero sum game” and the money would have to cut into other projects. But the commission is on board with spending $80 million to buy the downtown Post Office property, which apparently is more important than addressing the housing crisis.

Retired tennis star James Blake yesterday was tackled by NYPD officers who mistakenly identified him as a suspect in an identity theft case. Oh, the irony. Oh, the unnecessary police brutality.

Scientists say they’ve found a news species of ancient human relative, the Homo Naledi, in a South African cave. The remains are described as “long-legged”, “pinheaded”, and “gangly”, which doesn’t seem very nice.

Let’s watch Tavis Smiley give that windbag Ann Coulter the whatfor, shall we?:

  1. Oh man, how I can’t stand Coulter. Those words are too polite for how I feel really.
But, I can’t find fault in her words here. Perhaps you writers there don’t have much to worry about with illegal immigration, but working in the manufacturing field, I have seen the ranks become more and more filled with them, thus depressing my wages. And I don’t even work in the house building field, where almost all workers are immigrants (many illegal) now. They are nice guys, sure, but still.
My wife is a immigrant. But she was legal. I have no problem with legal immigration. Our country was founded on it, right?
But yeah, I guess you guys there at the Merc don’t have to worry about cheaper, illegal labor depressing your wages, do you?
