GOOD MORNING, PORTLAND! You know it’s Friday, too. I hope you can find the time this weekend to relax and unwind. LET’S GO TO PRESS.

After repeatedly failing to deliver on Brexit, British Prime Minister Theresa May announced that she will be stepping down from her post, but will remain a member of Parliament.

Sexually abusive creep Harvey Weinstein and the board members of his former studio have reportedly reached a deal to pay out $44 million to his accusers.

Along with other healthcare organizations, Planned Parenthood is suing Alabama for their draconian near-total ban on abortion.

The Trump administration is trying a new tactic to silence journalists, charging Wikileaks founder Julian Assange with publishing classified secrets, thereby setting a dangerous precedent that could punish reporters for providing important information to the public.

Meanwhile Trump’s authoritarianism rages on: The president has now given his Justice Department lackey William Barr sweeping new powers to investigate the so-called “traitors” who investigated his ties to Russia.

But the corruption and mean spiritedness doesn’t stop there, because the Trump administration is also proposing a new rule that could be used to deny healthcare to transgender patients.

Trump supporters are using slowed-down video of Nancy Pelosi to make her appear drunk and therefore discredit her, because this is another thing Trump supporters do. (Oh, and because they’re so great, Facebook is refusing to delete the videos.)

IN LOCAL NEWS: Portland city council approved a $5.6 billion budget that made drastic cuts to Parks & Rec programs, jobs, and community centers. Our Alex Zielinski was there and has the story.

The three theaters in the Cinetopia chain that abruptly shuttered earlier this week have been taken over by AMC Theatres. Get the details from our Ned Lannamann.

Now let’s glance skyward at the WEATHER: A cool and showery Friday and Saturday, but the Memorial Day weekend finishes on a very strong, sunny note!

And finally, I hope your Memorial Day weekend goes better than this kid’s birthday. (Umm, parents? You can do better.)

Bang bang, choo-choo train, let me see you shake that thang. Wm. Steven Humphrey is the editor-in-chief of the Portland Mercury and has held the job since 2000. (So don’t get any funny ideas.)

One reply on “Good Morning, News: Trump’s at Peak Authoritarianism, Theresa May Resigns, and Planned Parenthood Sues Alabama”

  1. Alabama’s license plate used to read “At Least We’re Not Mississippi.” Now it’s the reverse, at least until next week.
