Secret marriages and immigration intrigues top the bill this morning, after Willamette Week reported yesterday Cylvia Hayes—fiancee to Governor John Kitzhaber—was married nearly 20 years ago and told no one about it. WW strongly suggests that’s because Hayes’ third marriage was to an Ethiopian immigrant, and the relationship was solely to get the young man immigration benefits—potentially a crime. Hayes is expected to release a statement today on the report.
Just how broken is Cover Oregon? You know Sen. Jeff Merkley? With the six-figure salary and sweet federal benefits? Cover Oregon enrolled him in the state’s plan for its poorest residents.
You probably didn’t miss this, but I did in yesterday’s GMN. And it’s only right that we get into these pages the tale of a Gresham “open carry” advocate who had his new gun robbed from him at gunpoint. Terrible to hear of an armed robbery in our community, but there is beauty here, too.
And nothing but ugliness here, in the story of a local nanny who left two young children in a sealed car on a 90-degree day so she could go tanning. The kids didn’t die, which is great, but then Kristin Marie Jones immediately began telling judges she was the mother of a disabled child to win leniency. Lies! Jones is headed to prison for a while.
St. Louis isn’t done. A fresh round of protests broke out Wednesday, after an off-duty St. Louis cop killed a black teenager while working a private security gig. Police swear the teen fired shots at the officer in the exchange. The young man’s relatives say that’s a lie, and that the most-lethal thing he was holding was a sandwich.
The Washington Post is on a roll after a series of scoops about Secret Service foibles. Now the paper has this lengthy story about how a 2012 prostitution scandal in the agency might very well have also involved White House affiliates, and how that fact was very quickly covered up.
Remember all that national good feeling earlier in the week, when the Supreme Court announced it wouldn’t take up appeals to enforce same-sex marriage bans in a bunch of states? That good feeling did not permeate the misty blackness of Idaho.
More concern, down Texas way, about the spread of Ebola. There’s concern a sheriff’s deputy might have contracted the illness.
Meanwhile, Ebola isn’t the only thing officials are on high alert for in American airports. They’re also desperately trying to contain Americans itching to try their hands at the ISIS lifestyle.
Would you still love Jon Stewart on a Sunday morning? Thankfully you won’t have to find out.
Seriously, where’s Kim Jong-Un?

I have been to the Moda Center, and I have been to the Palace of Auburn Hills. They’ve both got charms, but in a straight-up swag-off? No competition.

Well, it seems Ms Cylvia Hayes did do a really DICK move and marry this guy for 5 grand in exchange for citizenship.
This may not be enough to vote against Kitzhaber, but she is comimg across, more and more, as a money-grubbing bitch.
Uh, what she did is illegal under federal law, she admitted it on camera, she should be prosecuted. Yeah, right. We all know that Democrat piggies are more equal than the rest of the piggies.
