There was a lot of stuff on last night’s Colbert Report worth noting here, some of it directly in my wheelhouse. I mean, come on! There was an interview with Stephen’s old friend Amy Sedaris where they made neckties into snakes in celebration of her latest crafty book. After that Stephen talked with Paul Simon, who debuted his new, deceptively downbeat Christmas song, “Getting Ready for Christmas Day”. It’s no “Christmas at K-Mart” but it would make a worthy addition to any Christmas Song Countdown.

That’s all well and good, but what really got me was a piece that brilliantly satirizes an issue near and dear to my heart: the inherent hypocrisy of Christianity in the West. Since this is Blogtown and not Obvious Theology 101 I know I don’t have to spell this shit out; we all know that the basic tenants of Christ’s teachings (give away all your money, judge not lest ye be judged, divorced people are committing adultery, etc.) are ignored by pretty much everyone, especially those who claim to be Christians. Please just enjoy this awesome video. Key line: “If this is going to be a Christian nation that doesn’t help the poor, either we have to pretend that Jesus is just as selfish as we are or we’ve got to acknowledge that he commanded us to love the poor and serve the needy without condition… and then admit that we just don’t want to do it.”

It’s best watched as a chaser after this awesome piece on the ridiculousness of a Christmas “Holy Week”.

  1. Jesus is a benevolent individual.
Colbert appears to think, like liberal democrats, that the entity of government is too.
And like liberal democrats, they demand the government first take from people by force, then redistribute to the poor. Which is also fail.

  2. I agree with D. Christians are giving people but choose to give of their own accord, rather than having that money taken away and doled out by some faceless bureaucracy. Colbert made a good point about the tax collector, but I don’t think it was the one he intended. The tax collector paid back four times that which he had wrongfully taken.

  3. Well, the Government should represent the collective will of the people. If the vast majority of the Nation is Christian- as a lotta of you fundies like to think it is. Shouldn’t the Government (ie the People’s collective will) provide safety nets to the least among us?
