Okay, guess what Democratic dumbass Joe Lieberman is doing TODAY? His newest hairbrain scheme is to put forth legislation that would give the President of the United States absolute power to SHUT OFF THE INTERNET in times of national crisis. Via…

Titled “Protecting Cyberspace as a National Asset Act”, the bill stipulates any internet firms and providers must “immediately comply with any emergency measure or action developed” by a new section of the US Department of Homeland Security, dubbed the “National Centre for Cybersecurity and Communications”.

Lieberman argued the bill was necessary to “preserve those networks and assets and our country and protect our people”.

He said that, for all its allure, the internet could also be a “dangerous place with electronic pipelines that run directly into everything from our personal bank accounts to key infrastructure to government and industrial secrets”.

US economic security, national security and public safety were now all at risk from new kinds of enemies, including “cyber warriors, cyber spies, cyber terrorists and cyber criminals”.

Seriously, does he not understand how the internet works? That activating a “kill switch” would not only bring our economy to a near-screeching halt, but could possibly cause irreparable damage? It sincerely blows my mind that this person is allowed anywhere near the federal government! SCREW. YOU. JOE. FUCKING. LIEBERMAN!

Whew. And now, a video of a baby bear who can’t stop sneezing.

Bang bang, choo-choo train, let me see you shake that thang. Wm. Steven Humphrey is the editor-in-chief of the Portland Mercury and has held the job since 2000. (So don’t get any funny ideas.)

  1. It’s in a national emergency that I would need a video of a bear who can’t stop sneezing the most. What the fuck, Joe?

  2. How about the people get a switch to shut off Joe Lieberman? In a crisis, Deputy Dog could only make things worse.

  3. There was a great story a few years ago (Edit: it appears to have won the Locus award for best novellette) called ‘When Sysadmins Ruled The Earth.’

One of the characters makes a good argument for a kill switch like this. They were struggling with an international catastrophe, and had to choose between letting the internet diminish in capacity and connections as it’s infrastructure failed, or mothballing it in an orderly shutdown so that it might be more easily reactivated later.

  4. How about this, genius, don’t hook up the key infrastructure and government and industrial secrets to the fucking internet?

Also, someone get that bear a handkerchief.

  5. CORRECTION TO YOUR CORRECTION OF MY CORRECTION: An Independent who caucuses with the Democrats is not a Democrat. He’s just not. He is not a member of the Democratic Party and is not a Democratic senator.

  6. Don’t forget the near constant stream of animals with their tongues hanging out that I will require during the end times.

Also, cutting off the internet in times of crisis puts a big dent in the plotline of the last George Romero zombie flick.

  7. Allergies are not funny and I kind of wish a bear would maul Joe Liberman and then there was a You Tube video of it that could be played at any time even or especially during emergencies throughout eternity.

  8. Its another excuse to control information. Come on guys, get real and think! Its not for a damn attack, if the internet is given over to the government its being regulated and interferes with our freedom!
