The National Weather Service is predicting 1-2 inches of snow this afternoon around rush hour for the Portland metro area.
Snow tda & tngt for nw OR sw WA. Expect a few inches inland & locally <=1″ at the coast. Heavier snow will likely spread from n to s during the aftn and evng hours, likely during the Portland aftn rush. Does this remind you of anything? Like maybe, Snowpocalypse 2016: The Day Portland Abandoned Their Cars?? Oh dear god, that was a clusterfuck. And it wasn’t helped by people abandoning their cars in the middle of the road, and frantic parents screeching about their children being stuck at school. (Remind me never to team up with these people in the zombie apocalypse.)
Anyway, while this afternoon’s commute may not turn into that big of a deal, as the saying goes, “those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” And with that in mind, here’s the blog post I wrote back in 2016 that documented this horror. Check it out, remember how naive we all were back then, and commit yourself to leaving work early today just in case. (OH, AND PULL YOUR STUPID CARS TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, PANICKY PAULA!)
FROM DECEMBER 14, 2016:
The Snowpocalypse has struck and Portland is currently in full panic and “abandon your cars” mode. Traffic is at a standstill, thousands of cars are reportedly stranded, school buses are unable to pick up kids in certain areas, and people are getting home in any way possible. Here’s what’s going on at the moment:
