Umm, I owe y’all an apology. Evil Dead: The Musical, a pick for yesterday’s My, What a Busy Week!, is pretty bloody awful.

God, I wanted to like it—I really truly did. I heart Evil Dead to the bottom of my rapey-tree roots, but this was just an endurance test. It was 2.25 hours of shaky acting, microphone difficulties, clumsy scenery changes, and vast amounts of what looked like Franzia rosé pumped into the backs of people’s head via Super Soakers. (A positive: The cabin looked great!) And there was also a puzzling scene from Rocky Horror Picture Show. But anyway, back to how long Evil Dead: The Musical was… sooooo soooo long. There was at least 15 minutes of padding so we could listen to someone’s “Groovy Evil Dead Playlist” complete with “Thriller,” “Dead Man’s Party,” and the theme song from True Blood in its entirety, while we sat there with their thumbs up our asses (at least I think that was my thumb—there were lot of disembodied hands running around). Nothing horror-based should exceed 90 minutes—this is a universal law—no matter how much you want to feature your really killer rendition of “Time Warp.” (And why was Riff Raff trying to pump up the crowd during an interminably long intermission? Shouldn’t he be off porking Magenta backstage?)

Anyway, I’m really sorry. And if you’re already part of tonight and tomorrow’s sold-out crowd with your really expensive tickets to the splatter zone, a recommendation: Get plastered before the show, ’cause the drunk dude up front last night was having the time of his life. But I think he’d been drinking since dawn, and the singing, dancing Deadites threw a bucket of Franzia at his head during the finale, so he’s probably blissfully dead today.

  1. Saw it last night. While I didn’t loathe it with every fiber of my being, I did think that it was poorly paced and that the acting left something to be desired. I enjoyed myself, but in spite of much of the production.

Getting doused with fake blood was kind of fun, though.

  2. Well you have the right to your opinion but I thought the show was overall a great success hearing that they had traveled and set up that day. Kind of sucked it was almost like a dress rehearsal but the second time I saw it this weekend, the cast killed it. Technical errors occurred probably due to the amount of blood but I thought the cast did an awesome job throwing themselves into this show.

It’s a tough job having to take a show on the road so I personally would love to send a shout out to the cast and say good job!

  3. Kicked “ASH”, I mean ASS!!! If this comes back to Portland, totally sit in the SPLATTER if you can. Crazy Evil Dead spoof with non-stop bad jokes, buckets of blood, most Sat night fun in a long time. Warning: Take some dry clothes…..

  4. Thanks EDead for Keeping Portland EVIL…..amazing show, it did last a little over 2 hrs, but we were entertained, laughed alot, def got our $$$ worth……

  5. This show was bloody fantastic!! Buckets o’ blood and all! Took a group of eight and none of escaped the splash zone!! HA! Please come back!! Thank you Thank you!!

  6. Those who can entertain perform in shows like The Evil Dead the Musical…those who can’t write reviews for local media.

I will proudly admit that this was the second time I have seen the show and wouldn’t hesitate to buy tickets should they bring the show around again. Perhaps you were expecting a carbon copy of the movie instead of the musical? While I appreciate your right to voice your opinion, I think the number of repeat audience members and the crowd reaction proves just one thing….it would appear that your opinion is that of the minority.

  7. IN WHICH THE CAST OF EVIL DEAD THE MUSICAL WRITE A BUNCH OF COMMENTS ON AN UNFAVORABLE REVIEW IN AN ATTEMPT TO MAKE IT NOT LOOK QUITE SO AWFUL. LITTLE DO THEY KNOW THAT THE BEST WAY TO DEAL WITH BAD REVIEWS IS TO NOT RESPOND IN PUBLIC AND MAY BE TRY AND LEARN A LITTLE BIT FROM THE FEEDBACK.

YOU FAIL GUYS, BUT 5 POINTS FROM SLYTHERIN FOR BAD METHODOLOGY.

  8. I don’t who posted any of the previous comments were made by, but as a cast member of Evil Dead The Musical (I play Scotty), I would like to offer my insight. Performing is ever changing, and never complete, and as for us doing it live, we will never be the same show twice. The reviewer came on opening night, admittedly was not our best performance, especially after we drove 6 hours, built the set, set the Wonder up, and did our performance. Even when we were in Portland we made changes to our show; scene transitions and timing. I am not trying to justify anything, just offering you an explanation and saying that we did learn and will always be learning. I just want to submit to you that if we were such a crappy show why did we sell out 5 out of the 5 shows, ended on standing ovations, and spend at least a half hour after each performance taking pictures and talking to hundreds of smiling fans. And we had multiple returns to the show from our last performance in July. As entertainers that is what keeps us going and not negative reviews. So I support your right to have an opinion and I appreciate and have learned from some of the comments. Thank you for at least coming to our show, and sorry it wasn’t all you dreamed – Scotty
