PUP, Ratboys, Beach Bunny
The best pop-punk songs are abbreviated battles between sadness and joy, in which neither side ever wins. Sublime tension is the thing, and PUP understand this better than most. The Toronto bandโ€™s third album, Morbid Stuff, is a bummed trip through mid-20s frustration and malaise, but the drunken self-recriminations and lovesick kiss-offs are delivered with the sort of wide-eyed vim that can only be accessed in ecstatic states. Every song is a shout-along anthem of devastation and glee, resignation and resplendence. Are you fed up with your life but so stoked to even be alive? PUP is for you. (Mon June 24, 9 pm, Wonder Ballroom, $20, all ages) CHRIS STAMM

Jamestown Revival, Ian Noe
The Texas-based Americana and folk rock duo headed up by Jonathan Clay and Zach Chance swing through Mississippi Studios for the Portland stop on their latest tour. (Mon June 24, 8 pm, Mississippi Studios, $18-20)

Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche, Tim Olmsted
Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche reads fromย In Love with the World, recounting theย Buddhist monkโ€™s near-death experience and the life-altering knowledge it left him with. Rinpoche will be joined in conversation by Tim Olmsted, president of the Yongey Foundation and of the Pema Chรถdrรถn Foundation. (Mon June 24, 7:30 pm, Powell’s City of Books, free)

Sublime with Rome, Common Kings, Seranation
Sometime in the last few months, a cultural re-appraisal of Sublime occurred. Nobody knows why, but multiple magazines, blogs, and essayists suddenly got the same idea: “What if all the jokes we’ve been making at Sublime’s expense these last 20 years weren’t altogether fair?” Well, now you can answer that question on your own, as Bassist Eric Wilson and singer/guitarist Rome Ramirez bring their Long Beach-based reggae rock and ska punk outfit to the Roseland stage for the Portland stop on a tour supporting their latest album,ย Blessings. (Mon June 24, 8 pm, Roseland, $39.50-60)

Video Filth, Violent Party, Horrendous 3D
Did you know Portland was almost named Boston? As thanks for not stealing their name, the actual Boston, the one on the East Coast, responsible for Ben Affleck, is sending us some pungent Video Filth, who will headline an evening of punk rock with the help of Violent Party and Horrendous 3D. (Mon June 24, 7 pm, Alleyway Cafe & Bar, $7)

Jamila Woods, Duendita
By now most folks probably know singer/poet/teacher/youth leader Jamila Woods for collaborating with Chance the Rapper on โ€œLSD,โ€ her shimmering ode to Chicago. She also put out the radical self-love anthem โ€œHoly,โ€ from 2016โ€™s Heavn, as well as โ€œBlk Girl Soldier,โ€ a song that big-ups Black woman who continue to be magic despite all they have historically endured. Now Woods is armed with a new studio album LEGACY! LEGACY!, and itโ€™s her best work yet. On the new LP, Woods celebrates 12 of her Black heroes, with each track titled and inspired by a different name. Thereโ€™s political, feminist messaging laced throughout, expertly produced, with the singer/poetโ€™s soulful intensity backed by a fleshed-out band. Seeing Jamila Woods live might just seem like a top-notch neo-soul concert at first, but her carefully crafted words, intentional phrasing, and intense delivery occasionally make it feel like a poetry reading at a Black Panther functionโ€”one thatโ€™s set to a world-class band of live musicians. (Tues June 25, 8 pm, Star Theater, $20 & Up) JENNI MOORE

The Rural Alberta Advantage
Canadian trio the Rural Alberta Advantage have done the thing that many bands have done over the last decadeโ€”take what are essentially straight folk songs, and lather them up with extra tricks and textures. In the case of bands like the Lumineers and Of Monsters and Men, it essentially amounts to polishing turds. But RAA offer up something a little more substantial, evidenced on their 2014 album Mended with Gold. Plus they’ve been doing itโ€”with far more gritโ€”long before everything became so overly precious; their 2008 album Hometowns still packs a punch. (Tues June 25, 9 pm, Doug Fir, $20) MARK LORE

Crazy Enough
Portland musician, actor, playwright, and author Storm Large celebrates the 10th anniversary of her autobiographical, one-woman rock musical with a special engagement at The Armory which kicks off on the artist’s 50th birthday. (Tues June 25, 7:30 pm, Portland Center Stage, $100 & Up)

Grindhouse Film Festival: Zombie
The latest installment of the Hollywood Theatre’s monthly exultation of exploitation cinema shares this rare 35mm print of 1979’s Zombie, an all-time hall-of-famer in the “Jesus Christ this is a wholly irredeemable chunk of trash” genre of cinema. Which makes sense, as director Lucio Fulci is more or less that genre’s patron saint. There was something fuckin’ wrong with that dude, and it shows in every slick-yet-somehow-still-grimy frame he shot. But if Fulci didn’t exist, we wouldn’t have the indelible image of an underwater zombie getting in a fistfight with a goddamned shark, so… I guess it all balances out? (Tues June 25, 7:30 pm, Hollywood Theatre, $7-9) BOBBY ROBERTS

Amenta Abioto, T.J. Borden, Mike Gamble
I just canโ€™t shut my trap when it comes to Amenta Abioto, whose work is a fluid combination of jazz, hip-hop, soul, and African music. To see her perform live is a real treatโ€”Abioto has been at the top of her game recently, having perfected her soul-stirring vocals, improvised song-construction, and spot-on comedic timing. (Tues June 25, 9 pm, No Fun, $5) JENNI MOORE

Re-run Theater: Miami Vice Fest 8
Better than cocaine, Christmas, and your birthday COMBINED,ย Miami Vice Festย returns for its for its eighth annual celebration of neon, speedboats, and the sweat-soaked, heart-thudding friendship between Detective James โ€œSonnyโ€ Crockett and Detective Ricardo โ€œRicoโ€ Tubbs. This year,ย Miami Viceย fans (โ€œVice-headsโ€) will be enraptured by two classic episodesโ€”โ€œEvan,โ€ which introduces Crockettโ€™s bullshit former partner, and โ€œBack in the World,โ€ which revisits Crockettโ€™s troubled time in Saigonโ€”while decked out in their finest โ€˜80s attire and surfing swells of synthy beats. God bless you, Crockett and Tubbs, and God bless you, Miami Vice Fest. (Wed June 26, 7:30 pm, Hollywood Theatre, $7-9) ERIK HENRIKSEN

Sinkane, Dreckig, Mad Alchemy Liquid Light Show
As you may or may not have noticed over the past couple years, weโ€™re in the middle of a flood of new music written and recorded in reaction to the possibility (and then the policies) of President Donald J. Trump. Such is the case with Dรฉpaysรฉ, the new album from cosmopolitan pop-rock artist Sinkane, AKA Ahmed Gallab. According to the charismatic frontman, the album tells the story of โ€œan immigrantโ€™s journey of self-discovery in the Trump era,โ€ and that story is soundtracked by vibrant songs that draw from American rock โ€™nโ€™ roll, African pop, modern blues and deeply funky grooves. The skilled players Gallab calls on make Dรฉpaysรฉ an impressive listen, and his perspectiveโ€”born in London to Sudanese parents and raised in Americaโ€”makes it unique. (Wed June 26, 9 pm, Doug Fir, $17-20) BEN SALMON

Ceremony, Sheer Mag
Letโ€™s be very clear: This is a killer twin-bill of American bands doing interesting things with and to punk rock and kicking ass along the way. Philly upstarts Sheer Mag are punks at heart, but their music struts like leather-clad classic rock, and singer Tina Halladay sounds like a soul singer spitting nails. Live, they are a relentless barrage of guitars, fist pumps, and sweat. And Ceremony, from the Bay Area, started out as a pretty straightforward hardcore band with obvious ambition, then blossomed into moody and beautiful post-punk shapeshifters on their most recent album, 2015โ€™s The L-Shaped Man. As a live act, they turn frustration and resentment into a skull-crushing wall of sound. (Wed June 26, 9 pm, Hawthorne Theatre, $16-20, all ages) BEN SALMON

Jim James, The Claypool Lennon Delirium
On the Claypool Lennon Deliriumโ€™s debut album Monolith of Phobos, the freak-psych pairing was surprisingly copacetic. Claypoolโ€™s skewed pop sensibilities were balanced out by Lennonโ€™s own burgeoning bizarro oeuvre, and Lennon seemed to be willing to go down the trippy rabbit hole with Claypoolโ€™s wormhole wonders. On sophomore record South of Reality, the pair continues their merry pranksterisms, deconstructing progressive-rock, psych and pop parameters with virtuosic interplay and wide-eyed, visionary pieces like โ€œBoriska,โ€ and โ€œEasily Charmed By Fools.โ€ Itโ€™s a match made in nard-trippinโ€™ heaven that ought to go well with Jim Jamesโ€™ own strange rock tidings. (Thurs June 27, 6 pm, Oregon Zoo, $35-95, all ages) RYAN J. PRADO

Janeane Garofalo
Even if you arenโ€™t sure you know who Janeane Garofalo is, you probably know who Janeane Garofalo is. Beyond starring in comedic staples like The Ben Stiller Show and The Larry Sanders Show (damn, we loved naming shows after white men in the โ€™90s!), Garofalo is also known for infusing progressive politics into her stand-up comedy before political stand up was cool. We could really use her biting commentary and wry observations right about now. (Thurs June 27, 8 pm, Helium Comedy Club, $25) BLAIR STENVICK
