THURSDAY MARCH 1

own CD featuring 16 of Portland’s many fine bands (See pg 17 for more info).

Party featuring FREE performances by Last of the Juanitas, The Prids, Pan Tourismos,

POETRY–With his quirky sense of history and rituals, ex-Poet Laureate Robert
Pinsky has un-shuttered more than a few windows to the American soul. Although
not as dreamy as Pan Tourismos (see Mercury CD Release Party), Pinsky
has a certain knack for the English language. PB
Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, 1037 SW Broadway, 224-TIXX, 7:30 pm, $20
-$23!
FRIDAY MARCH 2
THEATER–Sure, you could rent the movie, but Kiss of the Spider
Woman plays best on the stage–and this production by the Miracle Theater
is especially engaging (see review in the theater section or page 30 of the
paper). Subtle and well balanced, this play about the relationship between a
political prisoner and his gay cellmate comes alive with deft acting from its
talented cast. WSH
Miracle Theatre, 525 SE Stark, 236-7253, 8 pm, $12-15
HIPHOP–The Coup, an Oakland-bred crew, promises to be great with their unique blend of DJ-spun funk loops and snappy, spastic cuts. Don’t even get me going on the totally crazy lyrics: “Presto, read the Communist Manifesto/ Guerillas in the Mist, a Guevara named Ernesto, so/ (E-Roc: What a brother with a afro know?)” KD
Pine Street, 215 SE 9th Ave, 224-TIXX, $13
SATURDAY
MARCH 3
SWOLLEN MEMBERS–Try to see through your disgust with what is possibly the
grossest name ever. I promise it’ll be worth it: This hiphop collective promises
to understand the importance of balance and style. Mr Brady headlines, with
Oldominion, and Anticon rounding out the bill. KD
Tonic Lounge, 3100 NE Sandy Blvd, 239-5154, 9:30 pm, $9-$11
FIGHT THE POWER–Ever wanted to get in on the ground floor of activism? S.L.U.R.P.E., a ragtag group of PSU college students, is up in arms about racism, not to mention
any other offensive “isms” their young minds can brainstorm. To raise money
to fund god knows what anarchy and activism, they are hosting a benign
game of Bing-O! PB

WORKSHOP–While I’m sure your zine is really great and all, don’t you think
it’d benefit from a little Photoshopping facelift? The Independent Publishing
Resource Center will hold your hand along the way, teaching you Adobe Photoshop,
scanning, and other image-manipulating tricks. KD
Independent Publishing Resource Center, 917 SW Oak Street, #218, $7-$15, 7-9 PM, 827-0249
WEDNESDAY MARCH 7
FILM–What is most frightening about the award-winning documentary One
Day in September, is that the massacre of 11 Israeli athletes could
as easily happen today as it did in the 1972 Munich Olympics (see review page
37). Craftily edited with interviews of the only surviving terrorist, the film
regenerates the fearful tension from that day. PB
Cinema 21, 616 NW 21st, 223-4515, plays March 2nd to 8th, 7:00 pm, $6
