POETRY–With his quirky sense of history and rituals, ex-Poet Laureate Robert
Pinsky has un-shuttered more than a few windows to the American soul. Although
not as dreamy as Pan Tourismos (see Mercury CD Release Party), Pinsky
has a certain knack for the English language. PB

FRIDAY MARCH 2
THEATER–Sure, you could rent the movie, but Kiss of the Spider
Woman plays best on the stage–and this production by the Miracle Theater
is especially engaging (see review in the theater section or page 30 of the
paper). Subtle and well balanced, this play about the relationship between a
political prisoner and his gay cellmate comes alive with deft acting from its
talented cast. WSH

HIPHOP–The Coup, an Oakland-bred crew, promises to be great with their unique blend of DJ-spun funk loops and snappy, spastic cuts. Don’t even get me going on the totally crazy lyrics: “Presto, read the Communist Manifesto/ Guerillas in the Mist, a Guevara named Ernesto, so/ (E-Roc: What a brother with a afro know?)” KD

FILM–What is most frightening about the award-winning documentary One
Day in September, is that the massacre of 11 Israeli athletes could
as easily happen today as it did in the 1972 Munich Olympics (see review page
37). Craftily edited with interviews of the only surviving terrorist, the film
regenerates the fearful tension from that day. PB
