THURSDAY JULY 12
READING–Ariel Gore and other authors of Breeder: Stories from the New
Generation of Mothers, will be reading some of their unflinching, honest,
and practical anecdotes and advice about how to be a struggling single mom and
still be cool, active, and informed. KD

MUSIC–Where do lo-fi/four-track style rock and old-school hiphop meet? In
the midst of woozy vocals, creeping song structure, eerie melodies, and DJ Rop
Style. In other words, in Semiautomatic. w/ Onelinedrawing JS
Meow Meow, 527 SE Pine, 230-2111, 9 pm, $6
FRIDAY JULY 13
THEATER–Sometimes lust is better left as an unfulfilled fantasy, because
reality really can suck. The Dyke and the Porn Star plays out a moody, exotic,
and sweaty plot about what happens when one lesbian’s passion for a porn star
plays out in reality. PB
Triangle Productions, 3430 SE Belmont, 239-5919, Thurs-Sat, 8 pm, $17-$19
MAKEOUTCLUB–For one year, makeoutclub.com has been linking lonesome indie/hardcore kids (with mostly great hairdos) all
across America. But hey creepy pedophiles: IT’S LIKE PEN PALS, not like personals.
Help them celebrate their anniversary with a K Records Showcase and Selector
Dub Narcotic spinning records! JS w/ COCO, Get the Hell Out of the Way of the
Volcano, Examination Of, DJ Fact 103
Meow Meow, 527 SE Pine, 230-2111, 9 pm, $7
SATURDAY JULY 14
ZINE SYMPOSIUM–Do your part to support and participate in the subversion
and diversification of traditional media. Even if you don’t fancy yourself a
zinester, the Super-8, bike repair, and electrical wiring workshops should be
titillating and informative. (see feature pg 9) TL
South Park Blocks by PSU, all day Saturday and Sunday, free.
ELECTRONIC–You know when you hear electronic music that makes you feel like
you’re in a video game, tiptoeing around giant blocks of digital ice and dodging
flying dinosaurs? That’s the music IQU puts out–they’re all about innovative,
danceable stuff, like mixing up live instruments over looped beats. w/ FCS North.
KD
Ohm, 31 NW 1st Ave, 223-9919, 9 pm, $8
SUNDAY JULY 15
IDM INSANITY–Okay, so he’s an IDM geek who turns avant-electronic music into
an intimate pop experience. But he’s also a hyperactive, tweaky 19-year-old
who will rock your socks and charm your heart. He’s Cex. That’s right; It’s
pronounced “Sex.” OOOH! JS w/Stars as Eyes, Strategy Satyricon, 125 NW 6th,
243-2380, 9:30pm, $7
MONDAY JULY 16
HARDCORE–There’s nothing like a good hit over the head with a giant brick
of hardcore–especially when the musicians are two big, dykey chicks. The Haggard
are made of crazy rough vocals, and riffs so hard and fast you’ll probably fall
to the floor and weep. KD
Meow Meow, 527 SE Pine St, 230-2111, 9 pm, $6
TUESDAY JULY 17
MUSIC–Things I wish would return from the ’80s: cocaine, roller skates, my
figure, and of course Cyndi Lauper. The closest I ever got to her was at a concert
with my cousin who vomited like five minutes into the show, forcing us to leave.
I’ll be trying to finally forgive my cuz, by getting my groove on to the Cyndi
cover babes, Insecurious. KS
Ethos, 27 NE Killingsworth, 241-8824, 7pm, $5
WEDNESDAY JULY 18
FILM–With the warm sultry nights, short skirts, and shirtless men, you can
tell that summer lusting is in the air. Take your new lover to see The Road
Home, an enthralling story of a Chinese couple struggling to get together,
told from the perspective of their son. Then, with your heart a-floating, go
home and get together your darn self. TL
Cinema 21, 616 NW 21st, 223-4515, 7 and 9 pm, $6
COUNTY FAIR–Feel like smelling some dairy air? The unofficial Multnomah County
Fair hosts its annual tutorials in cattle grooming and gives you a chance to
yank a goat’s udder–yes, that’s right, goat milking! Watermelon seed spitting
contests twice a day, too. PB
Oaks Park, east of Sellwood Bridge, Tues through Fri, 10 am-9 pm, $3 for adults, $1 for children
