FILM–Name a better movie than Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. You
CAN’T! Cap’n Kirk gets his panties in a justifiable wad when Khan (the brilliant
Ricardo Montalban) stuffs a bug in Chekov’s ear. From there through the rest
of the movie, it’s a scenery-chewing maño y maño battle royale until Kirk finally
kicks Khan’s motherfucking ASS! Wrath of Khan RAWKS!!! WSH

What if you could get implants to help you hear? Would you do it? It’s not such

CYMBALS–For once, a Portland band whose name doesn’t start with the word
“the” and actually represents their sound! I mean really, when you hear the
name Laurel Canyon, don’t you just think of shiny, sweet cymbals, a gently strummed
guitar, wrapping your arms around yourself and swaying? I promise, their name
will deliver. KD

METAL–Heed my warning metal fans, do not miss Lachrymator or you’ll miss
the most tight, melodic, and intense instru-metal band I’ve seen in Portland

WRESTLING–Sure, you’ve heard about men wrestling women, or in more adventurous
circles, about midgets wrestling midgets. But women wrestling midgets? The promoters
claim that it is the first match of its type! Yes, it must be in Vancouver.

FILM–Bank robberies, a stunningly beautiful girl, psych wards and none of
that pandering, lip-biting Meg Ryan crap–this is the real thing. The Princess
& The Warrior: A visceral, captivating and totally deconstructed take on fairytale
romances from director Tom Twyker–you know, the Run Lola Run guy. PB

MUSIC–The Roots of Orchis have a musing and bittersweet sound, with songs
that slowly progress from plaintively lovely to deliciously full and harmonic.
They exhibit patience in their songwriting, but you won’t get bored–you’ll
get melancholy and thoughtful. TL

MONDAY JULY 23

MUSIC–Oh, Mark Robinson. I swoon at the thought of your voice. Your high-school
band, Unrest, was one of the most formative indie rock groups ever. You starred
Teen Beat Records, and played in Grenadine with Jenny Toomey. And your plaintive
lyrics make my heart burst with pleasure. Will you marry me? (figuratively)

WEDNESDAY JULY 25

MUSIC–If you love to dance but are fed up with the “bleep bloop bleep” of
most electronic music, it would behoove you not to miss Marumari (aka Josh Presseisen).
Armed with only a laptop and a mixer, Marumari samples 80’s pop riffs and jams
them together into an electronic stew so tight, even HE can’t resist shaking
