THURSDAY OCTOBER 4
IMAGO–You really can’t hate Imago. I know you’d like to, seeing as they’re
all about thinking they’re so hot for doing plays in New York on Broadway and
shit. But the thing is, they are really good, and their product is consistently
awesome. Their latest is Troyland, one woman’s take on Euripides. KD
Imago Theater, 17 SE 8th, 231-9581, Thurs-Sat 8 pm, $8-12
MUSIC–Call and Response play the kind of colorful pop music that makes you
want to go for a drive or eat popsicles on the back porch, and there’s just
something cool about that. So dial up your main squeeze, see the show and pretend
that all is right with the world. MS
Meow Meow, 527 Pine, 230-2111, 9 pm, $7
FRIDAY OCTOBER 5
HOMECOMING DANCE–Hey Portland! It’s time to show your school spirit and attend
the Mercury‘s Homecoming Dance! It will be an exact replica of
the homecoming dances you grew up with, including: hot and snotty cheerleaders,
disturbing mascots, getting your picture taken in front of cheesy backdrops,
the crowning of the Homecoming King and Queen, and excellent high school tunes
spun by the one and only DJ Glee Club (aka The Incredible Kid). Dress in your
best high school finery and get ready to party like it’s 199_. (Fill in the
blank.) WSH
Conan’s Pub, 3862 SE Hawthorne, 234-7474, 9 pm, $5
SCHEDULING–Holy CRAP! How can Tara Jane O’Neil, Mr. Wiggles, Thalia Zedek,
Mestizo, Rudy Ray Moore, Spinbad, Chamber Orchestra Kremlin, The Places, Seldom,
Cool Nutz, 31knots, Lifesavas, Pedro the Lion, and the Northwest Electro-Acoustic
Music Festival all be on the same fricking night, at different clubs?
WHAT SHOW SHOULD I SEE?! This is obviously the work of a hateful, vengeful god.

SATURDAY OCTOBER 6
MUSIC–Fans of the classic punk should flock to the Ash Street for tonight’s
wham-bam performance from those Seattle mainstays, Gas Huffer. Often referred
to as “punk with personality,” this handsome four-piece burns the shit up, singing
raucously tender songs of love, explosives, and the occasional Viking. Lopez
and Cherry Bomb are along for the ride. WSH
Ash Street Saloon, 225 SW Ash, 224-TIXX, 9 pm, $8
MUSIC–Dutch Flat are kind of spooky; I’m not used to someone singing so clearly
and in such a creepy speak. They’re like smoothly strumming guitar angels and
haunting dead people playing in the same band. Float on in for a listen. KS
w/ Plug Spark Sanjay and The Miss
Blackbird, 3728 NE Sandy, 282-9949, 9 pm
SUNDAY OCTOBER 7
GREEKS– I don’t actually know what retsina is, but I know it’s not
eyeballs, because you can get a glass of it at the 50th annual Portland Greek
Festival. The Greek Festival is far more exciting than many other ethnic festivals
for two reasons: 1. The crazy drunken circle dances 2. Baklava, mothafucka.
JS
Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 3131 NE Glisan, noon-9 pm, free
MUSIC–So everyone knows that the ’80s are back in and everything, but these
two bands, The Faint and The Prids, seem like they knew all about the ’80s,
in like, 1975. Seriously, all I have to say is–really good new wave. KD
w/ Now it’s Overhead and That One Guy
B Complex, 320 SE 2nd Ave, 235-4424, $8
MONDAY OCTOBER 8
HIPHOP FILM–Why do we sit glued to “New Kids on the Block: E! True Hollywood
Story” when we never even bought one of their albums? Because we love them or
because we love to hate them? I don’t know, but Word features behind-the-scenes
footage of Company Flow, Dead Prez, and the supastar, Eminem–watch him act
like an idiot in real life. KS
Clinton Street Theater, 2522 SE Clinton, 238-8899, 7 & 9 pm,
$6
TUESDAY OCTOBER 9
METAL–When life sucks, and you lose your job, and you come home and open
the front door to a giant dog shit that you just smeared into the carpet, what
should you do? Start sobbing? No–go to a righteous show at the Satyricon featuring
the meticulous Sabbathy metal gods C-Average, dueling drummers Cherry Valence,
party rockers Tight Bros, and instru-metal artists Lachrymator. Got it? KS
Satyricon, 125 NW 6th, 224-TIXX, 9 pm, $8
STRIPPER READING–I love a stripper. But a stripper/journalist?! Hot dog!
Lily Burana was once a big name in the stripper/activist scene in San Fran.
Since then, she’s decided to become a journalist, interview strippers across
the nation and write a book about it, called Strip City. Hear her read.
KD
Powell’s Books on Hawthorne, 3723 SE Hawthorne Blvd, 238-1668, 7:30 pm, free
WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 10
ART SHOW–Art shows often mean standing around with 101 sophisticates murmuring
and stroking chins while shoveling free cheese into your mouth. This show is
different. You’ll want to see Carson Ellis’ dark, fairy-tale paintings for their
own sake, free lunch or not. MS
Visage Eyewear, 1046 NW Johnson, 944-5475, Oct 4-Nov 1, 10 am-6:30 pm M-F, 11 am-5 pm Sat, free
