Every day until the end of the year, I’m remembering the fuckiest things I blogged about during 2010. Today we look at a fairly embarrassing little episode which everyone in Portland was only too happy to forget. Vegan restaurant/coffee shop Red & Black Cafe kicked Portland police officer James Crooker out of their place because he was allegedly making its customers feel “uncomfortable.” Yeesh. Not our finest moment—but maybe it will provide some fodder for Portlandia, so they won’t have to keep making the same tired, Andy Rooney-esque joke about PDX girls who wear glasses, or wear birds on their clothes.

Bang bang, choo-choo train, let me see you shake that thang. Wm. Steven Humphrey is the editor-in-chief of the Portland Mercury and has held the job since 2000. (So don’t get any funny ideas.)

  2. Actually, the focus of the story should have been on the “local blogger” who broke the story in the first place. Cornelia Seigneur, if I had to guess, just loved that she set up a scenario in which everyone made her point for her.
    It’s comparable to those parents in Beaverton who seemingly told their kid to ask inflammatory questions of that gay teaching assistant that they’d already tried to get in trouble for his fashion sense: they were the ones who started it, but if you said so, you were told how unfair you were being.

    Everyone fell down on that first one. The Merc at least broke the names of the protagonists in the second one.

  4. Best advertising Red & Black could ever hope for. They lost all the meat eating right wingers as customers, who were never customers to begin with. Portlanders who would patronize the place, are doing so a little more often.

    But it’s a little odd that the Mercury has been taking the side of the wealthy , meat eating conservative writer for the Oregonian from West Linn, Cornelia Seigneur, who set up the situation.
