Portland's first all-organic brewery, Roots crafts a number of fine ales and stouts so that's a good reason to go. They serve a small selection of tasty salads, sandwiches and appetizers, and host monthly art shows. That's a good reason to stay.

Discriminatory...
I have lived in Portland for over two years now, and I have never had a bad experience as far as restaurant/bar service until last night (03/20/09) at Roots Organic Brewery.
A lot of people in this town spend their limited, hard-earned dollars eating/drinking out, and not that we expect to be treated like royalty when it comes to service, but to be ignored altogether (discriminated against) is extremely disappointing, especially in Portland.
I am of East Indian descent, and my wife is Hispanic-American. We actually work for a local, organic food company, so we interact a great deal with people of the community on a daily basis, and again, have never had an issue as far as discrimination here.
However, when we walked into Roots last night during happy hour, there were several bartenders, but it was not busy. When one of the male bartenders finally decided to tend to us at the bar. His attitude and tone was that of 'what do you want' no menu, no description of your beer, no explanation fo happy hour. He even mentioned the price of the beer when we ordered as if we could not afford it, or were not going to pay. When we finally decided on our own what to get, a caucasian gentleman sat next to us at the bar, and he was automatically given two menus, and explained all the ordering options (happy hour, etc.) with a smile from the same bartender.
That is when we knew we weren't really welcomed (specifically by this server) and became uncomfortable amongst a sea of caucasians at that moment in Roots. I know they won't miss our business, but I thought I would let it be known my feelings of how sad it is, especially in Portland (Liberal City, USA) that people behave this way.
I unfortunately just came across this review. I want to offer my sincere apologies, as this is a terrible thing to hear. I give you my word there is no discrimination at Roots. We have always had a wide rang of people come into Roots. I am very disappointed to read how terrible the service was on every level. That particular server is no longer with us as and that is mostly why, lack of service skills. We strive every day do give our customers fair and equal service. If you ever get this please write me at Craig@rootsorganicbrewing.com. I would love to invite you and your wife back in for a night on us. We value everyone's business, and given another chance, I think you will enjoy what we have to offer.
Thank you,
Craig Nicholls
