Caroline Zavitkovski lived on her bike for 87 days, pedaling all the way from Portland, Oregon, to Portland, Maine, as a somewhat grueling honeymoon with her husband, Paul. In 150 words here's what she learned during those 4,000 miles:

"Biking across the country is just doing the same thing over and over and over. Pedaling. Camping. Pedaling. It's not as hard as you think it will be, it's more of a mental thing. Know how to fix a flat. Bring a down jacket, a helmet mirror, a mini-power strip, a stove that runs on regular gasoline, and waterproof bags. You can always find somewhere to wait out a rainstorm. Bring pancake mix, preferably Sturdiwheat brand. Always stop for ice cream. The best resources are adventurecycling.org and warmshowers.org—but don't try to plan everything, because it will go wrong. Make it up as you go along. Ask the locals. Small towns are great. If there's nowhere to camp, chat with people at diners—someone would usually tell us to come stay at their house. It helps to have a cute story. When in doubt about where to camp, call the sheriff."
