This week will be remember as the time The Late Show with David Letterman became obsessed with the “beautiful town” of Portland, OR—even last night’s “Stupid Pet Trick” was from a Portland corgie named Bruce (sadly he pooped the stage and was booed mercilessly by the crowd). Last night, one day after Sallie Ford took […]
Ezra Ace Caraeff
Ezra Ace Caraeff is the former Music Editor for the Mercury, and spent nearly a third of his life working at the paper. More importantly, he is the owner of Olive, the Mercury’s unofficial office dog. His writing has appeared in The Fader, The Stranger, The Onion's A.V. Club, ESPN's TrueHoop network, and countless fanzines that are thankfully long out of print. He makes a mean tofu scramble and yes, Ace is really his middle name.

Transient Involved in a Head On Collision While on Tour
On Saturday, while driving to Savannah, Georgia, local grindcore band Transient was involved in a head on accident when a SUV jumped the median and crashed into the band’s van. Singer Krysta Martinez was airlifted to a local hospital but should be fine following surgery. The band is currently stranded in Georgia with a totaled […]
Discomfort Zone: Hola, George Lopez
You unlock this door with the key of imagination. Beyond it is another dimension: a dimension of sound, a dimension of sight, a dimension of mind. You’re moving into a land of both shadow and substance, of things and ideas. You’ve just crossed over into… the Discomfort Zone. Or not. As we all know, my […]
Luck-One – “Can’t Get Over You”
Despite Luck-One pulling up stakes and relocated to Seattle from Portland (don’t worry, his arena league football loyalties still lie with the Portland Forest Dragons—suck it Spokane Shock), we still have a soft spot for the incredibly skilled emcee. His latest release is a much anticipated mixtape entitled King Of The Northwest, which will be […]

Arvydas Sabonis is Coming Home
He’s got my vote One of the greatest global basketball icons to ever set foot on the hardwood—from Lithuania to Portland—Arvydas Sabonis is returning to town following his induction to the Basketball Hall of Fame. The former Blazer enters the Hall on August 11-13 (jeez, that’s a long induction period) and then comes back to […]
Astronautalis – “Dimitri Mendeleev”
I’ve shamelessly used this paper to extol the greatness of Astronautalis since 2004 or so, which means I’m pretty darn thrilled to hear the news that my favorite Seattle (via Florida/Texas) emcee has a new album on the way. This Is Our Science drops (I can use that word, it’s hiphop) on September 15 and […]
This Week’s Mercury Music Section
Robin Laananen Le Butcherettes Another week, another Mercury music section to ignore while you read about how Morrissey declares that the Norway shootings were no worse than McDonalds or KFC. How can such a smart man say so many dumb things? There are many components at play with Le Butcherettes: A Guadalajara-raised singer named Teri […]
