Really? The World’s Greatest Decemberists’ Anagram Contest™? Okay fine, whatever.
Ezra Ace Caraeff
Ezra Ace Caraeff is the former Music Editor for the Mercury, and spent nearly a third of his life working at the paper. More importantly, he is the owner of Olive, the Mercury’s unofficial office dog. His writing has appeared in The Fader, The Stranger, The Onion's A.V. Club, ESPN's TrueHoop network, and countless fanzines that are thankfully long out of print. He makes a mean tofu scramble and yes, Ace is really his middle name.
Dead Letters: The Very Best Grateful Dead Fan Mail
Dear Jerry, I hate you. Signed, me. I’m always looking for a millionaire dollar book pitch (Hot, gay Vampires that crave a good, hard staking! What? It’s been done before?) so I can bail on this sinking ship and join the lucrative and profitable world of publishing. Since Gaydracula is out (it gets better, buddy), […]

The Decemberists – “Calamity Song” (Video)
The Decemberists‘ latest video was directed by… Mose Schrute?!? Michael Schur (former writer/producer of The Office, and current mastermind behind Parks and Recreation—plus the genius responsible for the greatest sports blog ever, Fire Joe Morgan) was behind the lens for this clip to The King is Dead‘s “Calamity Song.” The video is a homage to […]
Soft Metals – “Voices” (Video)
I like my metal soft—then again, perhaps not—and I like Soft Metals, the slinky keyboard duo/couple that is gaining plenty of momentum on their The Cold World Melts EP and more recent self-titled LP. Released by Captured Tracks, the LP centers around the wondrous “Vocals,” which is a pleasant coincidence since that track now has […]
Trail Blazers Wishfully Announce 2011 Preseason Schedule
Aw, how cute. Even if the NBA is currently mired in a crippling lockout with no end in sight, the Portland Trail Blazers still have to plan their preseason schedule, even if these games will most likely not happen. Sort of like that time I bought a tuxedo, just in case someone asked me to […]
Sabonis! Sabonis! Sabonis!
photo courtesy of the Portland Trail Blazers The Family Sabonis Hey Blazers fans both new and old, don’t be a Saboner and miss out on today’s Arvydas Sabonis rally at Pioneer Square. This might be the closest thing we get to a Blazers game—depressing, right?—for a long time to come. Might as well enjoy it […]
This Week’s Mercury Music Section
Jacqueline Di Milia Mister Heavenly Another week, another Mercury music section to read while you stare longingly at these Photoshopped iconic album covers. Looks like Cat Friday just came a day early. Not to be confused with Ms. Heaven Lee (star of such SpectraVision classics as A Girl’s Affair 11), Mister Heavenly is the new […]
Better Red Than Dead
The Parson Red Heads take it easy with Yearling.
Aloe Blacc – “Green Lights” (Video)
I adore Aloe Blacc. I’ve written about his music, his daytime dance party, and if Marjorie would let me past MOD’s velvet ropes of exclusivity, I’d write about the man’s stylish fedora as well. The Los Angeles soul singer stars in this fresh new video for “Green Lights,” where he hops off his broken scooter […]
The 6th Annual Portland Pirate Festival
*Bark* *Please kill me* *Bark* *Bark* Zombies, pirates, zombies, pirates, zombies, pirates… sometimes Portland’s quirkiness and steadfast desire to stay weird gets a little predictable. Case in point, the Portland Pirate Festival which is celebrating its sixth (!) year of saying the word “Yar” on September 3-4 at the Historic Waterfront in St Helens, OR—of […]
