The Coup’s frontman goes solo.
Ezra Ace Caraeff
Ezra Ace Caraeff is the former Music Editor for the Mercury, and spent nearly a third of his life working at the paper. More importantly, he is the owner of Olive, the Mercury’s unofficial office dog. His writing has appeared in The Fader, The Stranger, The Onion's A.V. Club, ESPN's TrueHoop network, and countless fanzines that are thankfully long out of print. He makes a mean tofu scramble and yes, Ace is really his middle name.

Red Fang – “Prehistoric Dog”
While I am hesitant to say that the new Red Fang video for “Prehistoric Dog” is the single greatest video in the history of ever, but, oh, who am I kidding? It is. The Whitey McConnaughy directed clip has everything a great video requires: Metal. Beer. Gratuitous vomiting. And, most importantly, angry nerds with weaponry. […]
Well, That Was Fun
Blazers fans, see that photo? It pretty much sums up everything. The team looked flat, Oden looked terrible (and wounded, the unofficial word is a “mid-foot sprain”), and no matter how bright this team’s future is, they are a long way from being as good as the Lakers. Oh well, there’s always tomorrow. (Unless Oden […]
It Begins: Trail Blazers vs. Lakers
It seemed like it was only yesterday that the Portland Trail Blazers wrapped up the season with a surprising .500 record–but, in fact, it was not yesterday (it was April 16th). But as last season came to a close–and non-erotic, yet equally as pleasing, dreams of Greg Oden playfully danced in all our heads (kind […]
“You Can Vote However You Like”
Idolator was right when they declared this clip “The Best Election-Related Thing You Will See All Day.” Seriously, just kill all the ads and run this clip all day long. Sorry, T.I., your song was just pwned by a bunch of little kids in school uniforms. End Hits: With McCain you’re going to have some […]
This Week’s Mercury Music Section
Another week, another Mercury Music section to read while you fulfill your carnal desires at the local Fill-N-Wash Car Wash. I wonder how many quarters it took him to… well, you know? Let’s all take a stroll into the Lone Fir Cemetery, where talented local indie musicians will regale us with tales of the haunted […]

Elliott Smith, R.I.P.
It was five years ago today that Elliott Smith died in his Los Angeles home at the age of 34. In the years leading up to his death, Smith had long since abandoned Portland, but his legacy will forever be anchored to this city. To be honest, I’m not sure I’d have even migrated here […]
The (Delicious, Lightly-Carbonated, Malternative) Dream is Dead
Poor Zima, we hardly knew thee. MILWAUKEE (AP) – MillerCoors LLC says goodbye to Zima. The joint venture between SABMiller’s U.S. unit and Molson Coors Brewing Co. told distributors in a letter Monday that production of the malt liquor beverage was discontinued as of Oct. 10. Chief Marketing Officer Andy England says the decision was […]
