For some reason the Mercury thought a reoccurring Blazers column would be a good idea.
Ezra Ace Caraeff
Ezra Ace Caraeff is the former Music Editor for the Mercury, and spent nearly a third of his life working at the paper. More importantly, he is the owner of Olive, the Mercury’s unofficial office dog. His writing has appeared in The Fader, The Stranger, The Onion's A.V. Club, ESPN's TrueHoop network, and countless fanzines that are thankfully long out of print. He makes a mean tofu scramble and yes, Ace is really his middle name.
Manchester Orchestra – “Simple Math” Video
We have a soft spot of Jesus-ish/emo-ish (which is worse?) rock act Manchester Orchestra—here is what I wrote about their last album—and the Georgia band is prepping full-length number three for release on May 10th. But regardless of your take on the band, you REALLY need to watch this video. Directed by the duo of […]
Who Are the Blazers Going to Play in the Playoffs?
AP Maybe the Mavericks. Or maybe not. With their ugly victory over the Memphis Grizzlies last night, the Portland Trail Blazers clinch the Western Conference sixth seed for the postseason. The team travels south to Oakland to play the Golden State Warriors tonight, but regardless of that game’s outcome, Portland is number six. That’s super, […]
Blazers vs. Grizzlies – Hot Live Blog Action
Live from the Rose Garden as the Portland Trail Blazers wrap up the 2010-11 (regular) home season and host the Memphis Grizzlies. For the sake of nostalgia, let’s look back at this season’s opening game. My, we were all so much younger (and skinnier) back then. Brandon Roy in the starting lineup? Optimism about the […]
Record Store Day Events in Portland
Record Store Day is just around the corner and two of Portland’s finest shops will be having plenty of events to celebrate. The downtown Everyday Music will be filled with the sounds of Hosannas (1:30pm instore performance), Zia of the Dandy Warhols (2pm DJ set), Brish Prarie (3pm instore performance), Sallie Ford and the Sound […]
Portland Trail Blazers: Playoff Bound
AP Even Andre Miller has no clue who the Blazers will play. It sure is nice to be back in America. At a bar in Hungary I watched their version of ESPN broadcast a curling match (tape delayed, naturally), women’s handball, and then a highlight montage from the Indian cricket team set to techno music—yet […]

End Hits Concert Challenge: Rotting Christ at the Hawthorne Theater
Part three of the End Hits concert challenge is up. We sent the dainty flower that is Raquel Nasser into the mouth of the beast to witness Greek black metal act Rotting Christ. Was she sacrificed to the Dark Lord? Only one way to find out…
Talking Grease with Quiet Life: How to Tour in a Veggie Oil Van
Colin Shane Quiet Life with a generous grease donor. In the wake of the news that punk supergroup OFF! was arrested in Arizona, and now face criminal charges for their alleged theft of used vegetable oil from behind a restaurant, we decided to drop a line to Portland’s very own Quiet Life. Still on tour […]
In Case You Missed it Last Night…
…Nicolas Batum’s last (less than a second) heroics. Or as Rob Simonsen put it while live-blogging the game for us, “HOLY SHIT!!!!!!” Well said my friend, well said. Now watch it again. And again. Really, it never gets old.
Blogtown Review: Blast by Colt 45
Here at Blogtown, we are true connoisseurs of the world’s finest spirits. Sixty-year-old Macallan, or a half-finished bottle of Mad Dog 20/20 rescued from a dumpster—actually, if you mix those two together you’ll have a little drink I like to call the “Hobo Billionaire.” No matter what it is, we will drink it. That is […]
