Great news! Y(our) imaginary book club pal, writer and This American Life contributor Sarah Vowell is coming to Portland this fall, when she tours for her new book, Lafayette in the Somewhat United States. Here she is, talking to Jon Stewart about Lafayette:
Aughhhhhhhhh I just died from cuteness and friendship. Okay but really. Sarah Vowell writes some of our most delightful American histories, most of which I prefer to hear her read aloud than to read myself. Lafayette follows the Marquis de (surprise!) Lafayette, who was a French aristocrat who became friends with George Washington (ayooooo!) and fought for the Americans in the Revolutionary War. Vowell’s interest in Lafayette is a deep-seated oneโshe recorded a segment for This American Life on Lafayette back in 2005, for an episode about joyful reunions. Lafayette’s was with America (the French weren’t real big on him).
So anyway, I guess I’ll go camp out at Powell’s now. Vowell’s going to draw a small army of armchair tourists and history majors. It’s our time!

DAMN YOU, AUTOPLAY! /fistshake
