I was having lunch with a gigantic lawyer who likes sex the other day, and we had happened to stumble in to Ate-Oh-Ate, the Hawaiian joint on East Burnside at 24th, next to where Alder used to be. I’d been aware of the place for a while, but always thought I’d save it for when I was good and starving, as Hawaiian food has that reputation. I figured he could handle the portions, and that I’d take the starchy sides home for playing with later.
This was silly. Ate-Oh-Ate isn’t a plate lunch dump: it’s delicious, refined, beautifully-done Hawaiian classics as designed by Laurelhurst Market/Simpatica’s Benjamin Dyer. The beef in the Teriyaki Beef is actually tender, flavorful, and recognizable as beef, instead of the usual handful of boiled comedy most teriyaki shacks serve. The crispy saimin with roast pork belly has an excellent balance of aromatic vegetables and noodles, and just enough pork to feel like a value but not so much that an oleaginous film lines your innards for an hour afterwards. The real stand-out here was the burger, though, which I’d put on any top-ten list in town. Look at that photo; this isn’t some fussed-up geek stack, this is an America Burger With God Dammit Sauce [figuratively]. Char, juice, perfect bun, the balls to have shredded iceberg outside of a cafeteria…it’s smart stuff and only $7.95.
More photos after the jump.

This place is great, and somehow never as busy as it should be. The happy hour chicken sliders are like $2 and super, super good.
Also I miss Alder every day.
I like “handful of boiled comedy” as a descriptor.
“isn’t a plate lunch dump”
Oh.
Is there any place in town that comes close? Big Kahuna has BBQ Spam, which is as authentic as it gets.
What the fuck are the people with the place where Alder used to be doing? It’s been sitting with paper over the windows and an liquor license sign there for a goddamn year.
Also, damn you for reviewing this place, now it’s going to be crowded as hell the next time I go in.
Mmmm, their menu looks great, Imma have to check that out. Thanks, Onstad.
I hate this place, to be honest. Maybe I wish it were a “plate lunch dump”, but their menu never sounds particularly appetizing, for some reason, and none of the food tastes like anything.
I might like it more with a menu overhaul, but after three tries with three groups of people, I’ve yet to find anyone with more than a “meh” opinion of Ate-Oh-Ate.
I mean, other than Chris and apparently Alison.
I eat there all the time, crispy Korean BBQ chicken, it’s great!
I like it too! I am participating in a food conversation!
I havent been since last year but plan on going soon! I really liked it.
The Katsu sauce is super tasty.
But the absence of Alder desserts next door makes me cry. I once scared the owner (or employee) there by trying to open the door when they were closed for the day. Apparently the new restaurant will be Levant: http://pdx.eater.com/archives/2012/10/12/s…
ATE-OH-ATE IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE RESTAURANTS. THE FOOD IS TASTY AND COMFORTING. MELOGNA IS A CRAZY PERSON.
