The “no” side in the fight over Measure 92—which would have required GMO labeling on most foodstuffs in Oregon—has held an enduring if tiny lead ever since Election Night. That lead, some 16,000 votes, was sizable enough, even with a bunch of ballots left to be counted, that outfits like the Oregonian felt comfortable calling the race as a certain loss.

Most of us moved on. But not the backers of 92, who kept insisting their narrowing margin of defeat would turn into a pell-mell rush of yes votes that might, fingers crossed, tilt the results their way in an improbable comeback.

That’s kind of happened. Late returns have decisively favored the proponents of labeling. But outright victory’s still looking tough. But the margin’s shrunk to a little more than 4,000 votes. And with several thousand challenged ballots still left to be counted, KPTV’s pollster, DHM Research’s Tim Hibbitts, has told the station he thinks a painstaking recount is practically guaranteed.

“The only thing I’m certain about right now is there will be a recount,” said Hibbitts. “The margin of error is 3,000. I’m completely comfortable it’s going to be way inside of that; we are going to go to a recount.”

This latest development does not include more than 13,000 ballots still being counted in Multnomah, Lane and Deschutes counties.

The campaign over Measure 92 was is the most expensive in Oregon history.

  1. The Mercury’s recommendation to vote against 92 came with a bizarre explanation, it sounded like a conspiracy-crazed stoned hipster. Aah we don’t like Monsanto and we’re not sure about GMO’s but you should vote against labeling because—uh, uh, because uh–

  2. I feel that the Oregonian made a grave error and should offer an apology. The day after the election they made a hasty decree of death for the ballot measure to label GMO food. This was a personal opinion stated as fact. Their Nov 5 story neglected to call any election official or mention results are not official. Reckless reporting discouraged 13,000 voters from fixing their ballots rejected for minor signature issues. Why would people fix something that is declared done? These actions resemble those made illegal by voter disenfranchisement laws. We deserve better. With 1.5 million votes the race is so close that laws force a mandatory recount. Weather 92 fails or wins is not my point. The Oregonian’s news on Nov 5th is an epic failure lesson for journalism students and those who should boycott the Oregonian.

  3. And then once we get labeling on all GMOs, we can fight those pesky vaccines that Big Pharma is pushing on us! Once we defeated the act of putting chemicals in our chemical, that is, with the exception of the dozen or so chemicals that we approve of, I just knew we couldn’t be stopped! Except for in the midterms, when the adults vote and college kids stay home.

Conspiracy-crazed stoned hipsters are here to save you all from yourselves!

  4. Why are we still debating this. “GMO” is too vague a term to use for any law making. Everyting we eat, EVERYTHING, is modified. There is no corn that can be purchased that has not been modified by human hands.

Not to mention that the changes made benefit everyone and make food more readily available to all, thus helping to reduce hunger.

So where were you, besides bashing the shit out of it, along with all other media here? And then, like a miracle, they acknowledge it, after the deadline is in for ppl to be able to fix their challenged ballots, interesting…..

  6. dozens of countries have GMO labeling laws, it barely costs anything to do. some countries have totally banned
    Gmo’s. wake up sheeple !!
