You portray the organization as not having anyone in charge as a structure to make people feel invested in community building. In reality, the power structure doesn’t disappear it just becomes hidden, informal, and impossible to hold accountable. When a group declares itself as an “equal community” or a “flat hierarchy” but still acts controlling and condescending, they are using a progressive vocabulary to mask a traditional, top-down power structure. By framing the community as completely equal, the people in charge create a shield. If you criticize them, they can twist it to claim you are attacking the entire community, rather than calling out their specific behavior. In these environments, “equality” often means everyone must agree with the hidden leaders. If you speak up or disagree, you are framed as “not a team player” or “ruining the community vibe.” This is why you don’t have more people stepping up to take on more to build what could be a really cool thing. With every question they ask or conversation they join, they realize that there are certain folks that get the last say. These shadow bosses can’t be questioned, can’t be held accountable and are able to make people uncomfortable. It’s being talked about and people are stepping away because this place actually does not match their values, is not interested in growth and equality and is a little personal club for the people who have declared they are in charge. Lame and all too common in this faux progressive city.—Anonymous
