I got to my job early and rushed through everything I could so I could take my cat to the vet on Tuesday. We found a lump on him a little over two years ago and it ended up being cancer. We did what we could but it was never going to be enough. He lost so much weight in the last couple weeks and was we made our decision when he stopped eating and drinking. If we didn’t do it soon, he would have had a much more painful passing. I took him myself so my family didn’t have to be there. I left his carrier open a little too much so he didn’t have to feel so trapped. He never liked the carrier. This time, he crawled out of it and sat in the passenger seat next to me just to prove how sweet and perfect he was all the way to the end.
I told him he was my best friend because he was. I told him that some of the best parts of the last ten years had been watching him jump up and rush to meet me when I got home from work. There is no one in our house that didn’t love him with their full heart. We’re all going to miss him so much.
The vet that did the procedure was very kind. I held him and he went very peacefully. I know I did the right thing but it still feels awful. I left him on the table and went home with an empty cat carrier. I did a work out and ate some dinner and went to sleep so I can continue working everyday and fulfilling all my adult responsibilities. Everything set to a schedule. Barely any time to grieve. He gave us more than we could ever give him.
I got home the next day and he wasn’t there to greet me at the door.
I can feel him sitting next to me in the car as I drive to and from work.
He was my best friend.
I miss my cat.—Anonymous
