Why does KATU feature a former Oregonian sports columnist’s gripe (called a “high alert) that we may lose the Blazers? Why is any city’s pride tied to giving money to a mean billionaire, for an entertainment option that is way out of reach for a majority of our citizens? Why isn’t our city’s pride tied to really getting the homeless housed? In my lifetime, the homeless weren’t a common thing to come across, once upon a time. Now we can’t build enough new 24-hour shelters or give relief and advocacy to those threatened with eviction. Now the unhoused sleep in their clothes on the sidewalks, constantly facing us with the question of whether we are our brother’s—or sister’s—keeper. One place to meet the needy is Pioneer Square, where you can also meet petitioners, often from out-of-state, omitting facts about the “public safety” initiative, never mentioning that the proposed measure’s goal is to take 25% of the Portland Clean Energy Fund for police forever. I’m sick of billionaires and dishonest campaigns. I wish I had more reasons to be proud of my city.—Anonymous
